If you buy a bike from Target

    Check all connections before riding.

I bought my wife a new schwinn. We go it home and she took it for a ride to have the left peddle fall off and causing her to take a nasty spill on the road.

I am on the phone with Targets manager right now giving him heck about the quality of their bike installers.

Mitch, I don't wanna tell you what to do, but if it was me ... Monday i'd be looking for a lawyer.
I'd end all communication with Target and see what a lawer says first.
If you find one that will not charge you ANYTHING unless you win ... that's the kind to get in these cases.
Most of the time an honest lawyer wont take this kind of case unless he knows he can win.
I'm guessing all you'll get out of the corperate office call is a "heart-felt sorry"
They will also say they will look into it and reprimand you local store...
          They wont, though

you know that if this happened with walmart, no one would hesitate to sue them. lol.
i agree with the others, you should call a lawyer, esp. since the store manager wasnt much "help"..(they never seem to be)...and see about what kinda rights that you would have, if you wanted to sue them for something. target always acts like they are better than every other store out there, would be nice to see them get put in their place for once. but, that's just me.
also, hope that you wife is ok and didnt get hurt too bad...

I wouldn't put much faith in ANYTHING assembled at Target, Wal-Mart or the like. In high school I was a Wal-Mart stockman, and I had to frequently assemble bikes, or reassemble bikes that had been brought back in because the first guy goofed up. I tried my best, but I wasn't much of a handy-man back then (not too good now). But the guys who usually put them together on 3rd shift would much rather goof off for 8 hours than take any pride in their work. Not saying it's always the case, but if a monkey is running around with a store vest on, they'd ask them to assemble the bikes.

Sorry about your wife Mitch. I'd call home office first and see how things go from there.

Thanks for the advice and concern for my wife.

Tina is doing well, her knee is sore. He will probably get ti checked out with a doc to make sure nothing is torn or chipped inside.

I also filled out a incident report at Target. I am supposed to hear back from their accident people in a day or 2. Probably Monday.

I also took the bike back, after the incident we took a closer look and it was a pile of junk, and not worth the 168 bucks we shelled out for it.

You are saying sue like it's an easy and automatic thing to do, far from it.

Be prepare to spend a lot of money and time if you are taking that route.

In all fairness (and I apologize ahead of time to Mitch and his wife), it's going to be pretty hard thing to prove in a court of law.

I guess I need to say I have not planned this far on what to do. I am supposed to hear back from what I guess is Targets insurance company on Monday.

Mitch, forget buying bikes at Target.

Do you have a local fleamarket?

I bought these two used and already assembled bikes (a Diamond Back and a Huffy) for $50 each, pretty darn good bargains...and they are perfect, no malfunctions whatsoever.

True of any non-bike specialty store selling bikes. These are not bicycle experts. You should definitely check - Heck for safety reasons I double check specialty bike items as well. It only takes a minute, Same as your car - it is recommended to do a safety check before getting going.

It sucks it happened just the same. Sorry about that. I would say that unless she sustained serious injuries, you are only going to cause yourself grief anf cost time pursuing it.

PS - I got a schwinn from target last year as well. There is an 800 number in the back of the owners manual for lifetime warranty on parts and other limited warranty stuff. hang on to your receipt and that number. target does not have any sort of service available.

Schwinn also isn't really schwinn - the company was bought by pacific bikes - a chinese co. the bikes sold at department sores with the schwinn name are not offered at schwinn stores (at least not by the same name)

As far as value goes - I would say that my schwinn prelude is the bottom of the line road bike. -however at $300 cheaper than the closest bike store price for same weight, style and components -you can't beat it. I expect it not to be the dream bike - I (and you ) will need to shell out more money for that.

Good luck with whatever you wind up with. I would recommend craigslist or your local classifieds used bike shops or yard sales. You can get a quality bike used for 2-400 bucks. Name brand new you are looking 400 - the sky.
