Oh man, that's scary, I hope that Kev comes through this ok, he's lucky!

It's not all that cut and dried. From the article you linked:

"The scientists say that this five-fold marijuana risk is a little higher than the risk for sexual intercourse, about the same as that for other types of strenuous exercise, and much less than the risk caused by cocaine, which increases one's chance of having a heart attack 25-fold.

These risks are compounded by other lifestyle conditions that affect heart function, such as such as smoking cigarettes, being overweight, and not participating in physical activity."

During the first hour, pot can cause a slight decrease in blood pressure, which will cause your heart rate to increase, like it would if you exercise or have sex. As long as you don't have other heart issues (and Kevin was already at risk anyway), as mentioned above, the normal person should not be overly affected by this.

Fair enough. I didn't mean to be so glib. Whatever his risk factors, I am glad they were able to save him and I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I really hope he gets on track to live for many more years to come.

Don't you dare go and die early on us, Kevin Smith!

No worries, I get what you are saying. The dude had a lot of risk factors, his weight, lack of exercise, diet, genetic predisposition (his father died of a heart attack), maybe more (not sure if he smoked cigarettes?), so the slight affect that marijuana can have on blood pressure/heart rate might be a lot more detrimental to someone so close to the edge of a heart attack. And yes, I'm very happy that he's still with us and hope that he takes better care of himself. When my father had a heart attack in his 40's it was a huge wake up call for him, now he's pushing 80 years old and he's still alive and kicking. (yeah, so I have to worry about the whole genetic predisposition thing too, but I had my heart, etc. checked out a couple years ago and I'm good).

He must be feeling better if he can hold a camera in front of his face for 20 minutes of TMI babbling..
