If I get the urge for bought fried chicken, I usually run by Popeye's as theirs is actually still pretty good. Most of the time if I want chicken at home, I mix up an egg yoke with a little buttermilk, dredge the chicken in that, then coat it with a combination of Kellogg's Corn Flake Crumbs and Kentucky Colonel Seasoned Flour, then pop it in the over for about 30 minutes on 350 degrees. Comes out crispy and juicy with no frying involved. If I want to add a little sweetness to the bird, I'll actually pulverize some Cap'n Crunch and toss it in with my Corn Flake Crumbs. Good eats for sure!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Dwayne has called it right--KFC is delicious when prepared well, but there is so little consistency from shop to shop. It can be awfully greasy. I do want to try the GA version though--I love mustard.

Yeah, I go to Popeye's once in a while...I like it better than KFC. Church's Chicken is known as the ghetto chicken, lol. I also like Chick-fil-A...but that's a chicken sandwich place, not chicken on the bone...and the closest location is in Fremont, 26 miles from Oakland. San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and most of the inner Bay Area refuses to accommodate their franchises...frivolous political stuff...

Many great restaurants and mom & pop fried chicken eateries to be found here, just like in your areas...

Bojangles is making its way into our area with a few locations popping up in nearby towns. That's a usual fast-food stop when we're driving down south on vacation. Kind of a KFC meets Popeye's vibe.

I've always wanted to try Popeye's but the only one close to me is in a really bad suburb of Cleveland, and I would literally be taking my life in my hands to get some chicken. LOL

Same situation for me where Popeye's is concerned.

I do all of the cooking at home and I occasionally make fried chicken. It's really good.

I like Popeye's quite a bit. The whole chain pulled out of the area for about 10 years, and itjust came back last year. I was told the chain took away the franchise from the company that held it in the area, and it took that long to get someone new to take it over. When the first new one opened in nearby Lexington, near our local comic shop, the drive-thru line was backed up for literally hours! We had to wait a few months for the crowds to die down to give it a try. Good stuff.

A few things that makes Popeye's number 1 in my book.

Love the coating - melts in your mouth and not overly hard and crunchy

Chicken itself is better quality and super juicy (not greasy juicy) --- white meat pieces aren't weird gray color like sometimes at KFC.

Sides are GREAT --- Cajun rice tastes just like the filling in mom's stuffed peppers.... Beans and rice is yummy too.

Have some fried shrimp dishes that are pretty tasty.

Finally, compared to KFC, Popeye's is CHEAPER !!!

Agreed with everything you said, Mike.

And it's offered mild or spicy too.

I love Popeye's, and their side dishes are awesome as Mikey says. I order the tenders, not the pieces, though.

I prefer chicken on the bone. I find the tenders a tad dry.

Having said that...tenders dipped in sauce solves that problem, ha...

Who here likes Boston Market? I dig it, tasty and juicy rotisserie chicken.

But my favorite chicken from a large chain has to be Pollo Loco, delicious Mexican-style grilled chicken...a thousand times better than KFC's grilled chicken...a thousand times, lol...

I use sauces, Hec. Popeye's has some terrific ones. I'd buy the Mardi Gras Mustard by the bottle if I could.
