Good Places to find Comfortable Mens Pants....

Mens Pants. Gents, we all gotta wear 'em (unless you choose to wear a kilt, sweats or go pantsless).

I'm looking for a place, whether it be online or brick and mortar, to find good, reliable comfortable pants for a almost-middle-aged dude who has, unfortunately due to the hours and nature of his job, has gained a few pounds. Add in the fact that I have rather short legs (usually a 29" to 31" inseam) and I have lots of trouble finding comfy pants.

Looking for both khakis (or "dress casual" pants if you'd rather), preferably of the pleated variety, and blue jeans.

I've tried a number of local retailers, but so far have come up with bubkas. It's like all pants these days are cut to be worn VERY low on the torso (not my style) or treat males as if they have no----uhm----"luggage" to cart around.

I've looked at some of the stuff from Duluth Trading Company, but the price and the fact that it's only available via the Internet (for me, anyway) are stumbling blocks for me. Anyone here ordered pants from them and, if so, do/did you consider them comfortable and durable?

Open to hearing any and all suggestions....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Dockers classic pleated? I have good luck with those for work.

I like Wranglers cargo pants, too. I don't wear jeans.

I've tried multiple pairs of Dockers and, no matter what style I try, they are usually the worst offenders when it comes to a lack of regard for my luggage; perhaps it's because they tend to skew towards a younger crowd and therefore make the area of the pants from the top of the waistline to the crotch uncomfortably short. I've also tried on a few pairs of Wranglers and have similar issues. Thanks for the input, tho'....!

I go to DXL/Casual Male XL...a bit pricey, but they have some good stuff.

        The problem, I'm like you...short inseams...even though I'm tall, 6' 2", it's large torso, short legs.

I just get their 30" inseam pants...and go to my local alteration/tailor, and hem them a bit.

Lol, so funny how much we are in this together. Relaxed straight or regular boot American eagle. Plus they are on some super flex kick, which I can't stand by can understand. Levi's 559 or 569 also work for me. However, Don't give up. Get in a workout regimen that is at least 25 minutes a day, makes you break a sweat, cardio and weights to get the metabolism rocking while sitting at your job. Check with the doc first and make sure you are good to do something like this. It does work. Have to eat better and try to cut down on carbs and sugar. Lbs will melt off. But if you reach your goal and stop it will come right back and then some. You and all us chubby sit down workers gotta do this. But those pants sizes I mentioned worked for me in the interim. Best of luck to you. Happy new year resolutions!!

Thanks for the intel, gentlemen. Appreciated, as always. I do have a Casual Male/DXL near my Mom's house I'll have to check out.

Sad thing regarding diet and exercise; I really don't eat a lot and actively try to avoid things with too much fat or carbs, but it leaves a very narrow band of food choices (considering that even carrots, likely my favorite vegetable of all time, are chock full of natural sugars and therefore carbs), so I drink a lot of water, naturally flavored seltzers and go through beef jerky (lots of protein, relatively low in fats and carbs) a lot. Unfortunately, my gig as a Prepress Operator doesn't really allow us much in the way of time to do much besides lunch and an occasional jaunt to the head. Everything is hurry, hurry, hurry, we need this last week.

And as much as i enjoyed going to the YMCA religiously a couple of years back, ever since I broke two of my toes power-walking and fractured my left kneecap in a fall a few months later, I haven't been able to climb back on that horse again as of yet. Of course, my weird work/sleep/life schedule has something to do with that, too. I'm a short of shift-straddler currently since we're down a couple of folks in our department. I go in M-Th from 3:30 until (supposedly) Midnight, but it's usually more like two or two-thirty. I go home, try to wind down enough to hit the sack by 4 or 5 so I can get up by 11:00 the next day to get household stuff done, then the cycle starts all over again! And on Fridays, it's in at Noon usually until whenever we get finished. Saturday, I have to let the old 52 year old anatomy get a little rest and Sundays are spent running errands and visiting with family. Is it any wonder I don't have time to find comfortable pants?!? LOL!!

I'm in a similar boat as you: deskjockey job doing graphic design, and fairly short legs. And yes, many men pants nowadays seem to require pre-castration to wear them.

Oddly enough, I've found men's pants with elastic waistbands have more...room up front for such things. Even if you don't NEED to wear them due to your waist size, it's worth it for the luggage benefit.

If you can find one still open around you, I've found K-Mart's "Basic Editon" elastic waist, relaxed fit khakis to be a cheap but well-made pair of pants for every day dress casual. I have to ocassionally go out on the plant floor, and I ruined several expensive pairs of pants. Having bought that lesson, I tend to go cheap.

For jeans, I REALLY love Old Navy loose fit jeans. Plenty of room up front and they are pretty durable. Old Navy usually runs sales, and you can often find them for $15-20 a piece.

                  Good luck!

I've been wearing the Levis 541 "athletic" fit jeans for the last couple of years. I even have some coloured ones for work. The legs are larger in the thighs and they have some stretch to them which is a godsend. I think I got them at Penney's or Herbergers, but you can find them online. They are very comfortable and I think they look good too.

Kudos to both of you gents for the input. Our last K-Marts in this neck of the woods closed last summer, but I'll check their website (provided they still have one). It is weird, too, inasmuch as when I can find less expensive khakis (which isn't often), they actually do seem like they fit better in the areas that matter than their pricey counterparts. I've got a pair of Puritan brand khakis with the expandable waistband that found at Wal-Mart probably six or seven years ago that are my current staples, but the material around the pockets is starting to go south and I've had to repair a few of the belt loops, but they keep chugging along.

I'll have to check out the blue jeans both of you mentioned. I only get to wear them on Fridays (or if the weather is really crappy) and on weekends.

A friend of mine at work told me to check out both Bass Pro and Cabelas for roomier baggage compartments, so I may look into those places, as well...

Heh, I'm not American so my suggestions won't exist to you but I know the struggle. I was born without much of behind so I honestly have the label of my favourite jeans on my phone and i just go in and buy new pairs. My closet looks like Little Orphan Annies.

don't know if you have primark over there but their jeans start at a 30" inside leg and are pretty stretchy and really cheap too.

I took a page from Jim Harbaugh's book and hit up WalMart for some $13 khakis. They're OK. Also, Costco usually has slacks* in bulk. For extra room, I'd hit a Haggar outlet store and look for an elastic waist, as someone already mentioned.

*Heh heh, "slacks." Heh heh heh.

                              Heh heh---he said "slacks", Bevis....

Waistbands are usually not too much of an issue for me (unless you're talking about some of those pants sewn in countries where people's sizes tend to run pretty small), no, my issue is ball room (and I ain't talkin' 'bout dancing here).

As E2C pointed out a couple of posts back, most trousers these days have such a short crotch that wearing them all day would nothing but miserable! And pockets---gotta have deeeeeep pockets so all my various stuff doesn't spill out as soon as I sit down...
