    This commercial urks me!

OK, it's no secret that I'm not a big fan of modern technology. But I am a big fan of Christmas. I think this commercial (this is the long version) definitely sends the wrong message about family and Christmas:

So the spoiled brats who are doing all that blasted "hashtagging" can't be happy to be spending time w/ their grandparents? They have to be "wired in" every minute? And the grandparents who break down and buy all that stuff are enablers. In my opinion, spending quality time w/ your family shouldn't always include TV, social media and high technology, especially at Christmas. Sometimes is OK. I have to tell you I wince whenever this ad comes on. Yeah, I know it's not that serious, but I just wanted to vent.

    Anyone else share my opinion?

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

I've never seen this before. That's unbelievably terrible. Horrible horrible horrible. You have to wonder what rotten scum came up with this?!

(Even that song drives me absolutely nuts, but that's likely just me.)

        BRAVO!

My 15 year-old son says the exact same thing every time this is on. IMO it's pretty despicable.

I can only imagine it's supposed to imply the grandparents love for their granddaughter through Comcast. Sheesh!

While it definitely tries to suggest the new age can translate "special moments" to any generation, it's VERY heavy handed on the "get with the times" messaging. I understand your feelings on that precisely. Where they grossly exaggerate the experience is suggesting the teenager will be engaged in family activities once she realizes she has wi-fi and all the tech. Most kids disconnect to their environment when they have access to texting and their gossiping friends. So that was totally misleading for that older demographic this commercial is selling to.

I can't stand this commercial either...how about when you're at your grandparent's house you put your damn phone away for a couple hours and actually pay attention to THEM.

Some people have no grandparents alive to visit during the holidays.

Yeah, this is a real flop on the message, we all put our phones in the desk in the hall at Christmas.

My kids are the only reason my in-laws got wi-fi, so I get what market they're trying to reach here but still, the commercial is a total fantasy.

I think of the scene in Gran Torino when the girl is playing on her phone during her grandmother's funeral. Ugh.

This commercial really upset my daughter, who thought the granddaughter was a real jerk.

THIS commercial offends my very sensibilities as a human being. It illustrates just how selfish, egocentric, small-thinking and entitled these kids these days are. It devalues human communication and interaction and reduces the world to a place of digital isolationism. Were I one of the grandparents pictured in the ad, I'm afraid my reaction would have been to take this spoiled brat child, plunk her arse in a chair and hand her a good, old-fashioned book and say "Here, you want to be entertained and spend no time communicating with the people around you? Read this book and stfu."
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I don't think that's fair, for one thing, this is made up.

My own kids and their friends aren't much different than we were as kids, in some circumstances I'd say they are actually more sensitive to each other's feelings. There are times where I wish I had friends as nice as theirs. I've met more entitled, selfish adults these days than i have kids.

Very well said. What's really bad about this commercial is it stereotypes two different age groups.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

My comment was a generalization of the current generation of kids ranging from 7 to 16 and even a few from 16 to 21. Are ALL children the way the children are depicted in this ad? Of course not, but there is a large number of them who ARE like that and the fact that they may likely be one day deciding the fates of older generations scares the bejeezus out of me. I mean, I'm as guilty as anyone else of checking my phone when I'm at family gatherings and sending an occasional text or e-mail to folks to wish them a Happy or Merry Whatever, but I make it brief and then turn my phone off and get back to paying attention to the people who are actually real and in the room around me rather than virtual and may be thousands of miles away. As with anything else, moderation is the key, but few kids (and even a few adults) these days comprehend what moderation is...

I dunno. Honestly, I grew up in "Hazard County" rural Canada, with RCMP car chases (the town police would not come out to my area; it was out of their jurisdiction, but we always said it was because we were too wild), back woods paths/roads, bootlegging, moonshine, cornboils, and a BW TV with 2.5 channels: Literally, 'that side of the tracks', but across the street from the community church. When I moved away to discover being an adult and city-life, I moved back home for a few short years. Cable TV had been miraculously installed in the community. So I treated my family to installed cable TV that first Christmas of my return, and it was finally on a color TV. This commercial reminds me of that new time with my family that Christmas. Agreed that it's marketing and it's fantasy; I had originally moved away because sometimes I acted like those little brats when I only had a BW TV and snowy channels; but parts of the commercial ring true with me 'growing up'. Just sayin'.
