Currently, it's
1. Spider-Man
2. Batman
3. Superman
Obviously the success of the Spidey movies put him in a whole new catergory. The amount of Spidey merchandise out there now rivals that of Batman in the early 90s following the first movie. Batman has had a sustained pressence in licensing since that 89 movie, so he comes in second. Superman, while always licensced and seen in the general public, didn't quite get the boost from Superman Returns that the others have. His action figure lines have come and gone.
Hulk is pretty distant to these three, despite him being right there with them in the late 70s/early 80s. In fact no other characters even come close, except maybe Wolverine and the X-Men.
If you don't count him with Batman, I'd say Robin is actually #4, in recent times thanks to his exposure on Teen Titans and The Batman.
But overall, more people know Superman. He's been hugely popular longer than any of them.
From what I recall reading before, the Superman symbol is as recognizable worldwide as Mickey Mouse's ears and Coca-Cola's contoured bottle. And I also seem to remember that he, Mickey, Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes are the most recognizable fictional characters (or something like that...)
I doubt any kid in either Guatemala, Namibia, or Cambodia, know who the flying heck Sherlock Holmes is, lol.
tough call with batman and spiderman but think of all the cartoon expose batman has besides all the other stuff. I know spiderman has some too but batman has a little more.
1. batman
2. spiderman
3. superman
4. hulk
but I would think Wonder Woman would be in the top 4? She is still know to most world wide and I would think even over hulk.
Of the 4 listed here though if I were to pick my favorite it would be superman.

Though not my personal order of preference (I'd swap out Bats and Spidey)...
1. Superman
2. Spider-Man
3. Batman
4. The Hulk
I'm not so sure about the Hulk, maybe for our generation he'd be in the top 4, but I'm thinking for today's modern audience, he could easily be replaced by Wolverine, who seems to have enjoyed a more steady exposure than the Hulk (in comics, film, TV and merchandise) over the last 20 years.
