A band I liked in the 1960's, and still like?

No, really! Hey, like The Music Machine, they too did a Neil Diamond cover. And you thought I was taking a cheap shot at The Sex Pistols when I compared them to The Monkees...

Frank Zappa appeared in their movie... Jimi toured with them...
Yeah, sorry about that... And it was the NY Dolls I thought you were comparing the Monkees ( I misunderstood and am somewhat defensive about the 'Dolls... Johnny Thunders is on my hero list...)
I actually like the Monkees. They did some really good stuff. I just watched Head last week and had forgotten what a wonderful little trip it is. I feel pretty bad that they started to go in a more serious direction and oddly, stopped being taken seriously. And Jimi OPENED for the Monkees and was booed offstage on several occasions. Oh, hindsight... we laugh at you!
Small label 60's stuff, especially garage rock has to be judged by a different criteria. The artists had very little control over their recordings and often cover songs recorded in practice or live sessions were stuck on albums by record companies seeking to "cash in"... and the artists rarely saw a dime. This happened to LOTS of bands, Music Machine and 'Elevators being only a couple examples.
And for the record, I liked nothing in the sixties as I was born in 1970... All my 60's music knowledge comes from either a) my dad's record collection (which was awesome) or b) being a pretentious record collector/music snob.

Hell ,if I was in band, I would cover a Niel Diamond song! In a heartbeat!

And Joe90, I dig the Monkees, too--especially Head, the soundtrack to their movie of the same name. That record rules.
I would say the Monks count as American, as they were US military stationed in Germany, and they address (in a surprisingly raw and honest way) American issues (i.e US involvement in Vietnam)
      Didn't know Day had died...

Hey Droid, have you seen all the Monks clips on youtube? This one is particularly nutso, specially when considering it's 1965!

That's one I haven't seen before. Awesome. I have seen bands in the last six months not up to that kind of weirdness (but trying hard). That guitar tapping thing is crazy!
This is going in my "You think you are original but someone did it way better before you were born" file.

I don't have just one favorite....The Doors, The Byrds, The Monkees, Alice Cooper (their first album Pretties For You released in the late '60s is one of my all-time favorites), The Box Tops.....so many more.
