    Facebook "Mystery" Friends

    Ever get these?

Not long ago a woman requested my friendship, we grew up in the same town and the mutual friends list was substantial, even the people i wasn't friends with in her list, i knew a lot of them. So I became her FB friend.

We occasionally have normal, positive interactions and she isn't one of those "drama people". When she posts, i am often amazed at how many of the people we mutually know.

This person was clearly in my life but I have no idea who she is.

Even worse? I found my kids looking through my high school yearbook and I'm sitting with her in a picture. I stared at it for a while and it's feels like a Twilight Zone, just nothing.

I honestly worry that any communication besides pleasantries will become a Seinfeld situation here.

Not something I've had to deal with and I have tried my best to block out the trauma of high school.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Oh I've got a couple of weeds in my garden too, I'm sure we all do. It's just weird to forget someone, let alone a cute girl, from that period who went to your grade and high school.

I was more of a "house party" type, which may answer my question cause I can't even remember who i knew to even get into those.

I have several facebook friends that I don't have a clue who they are and some have even messaged me and talked about past "good times" and I still have no memory of them

I don't do facebook but i'm kind of the opposite of the situation above.

I'm very good with remembering faces and events --- the names elude me many times though.

This only works for long time memory --- don't ask me what happened last year or even last week.

I sometimes think I have some sort of early onset Alzheimer's as there are people whom I was very good friends with who I've completely blocked from my memory. Facebook and propts from friends -"yeah you remember Steve, we ALWAYS hung out at his house, we went camping at Big Boulder, remember" Me - "uh, kinda?!"

Well, I've had that happen, but assume it's someone who was friends with my younger sister or brother. What's odd is I was talking with a girl I went to school with, and she was telling me about how we used to go riding around with someone and his girlfriend in his truck. I have no idea who the guy she's talking about is and no memory of that ever happening. I've really thought about it, but can't come up with anything.

Yeah I got that going with one my oldest friends, he's always mentioning people and I just stare at him with no expression. He dropped out, so I'm not sure what why he remembers more than i do.

I think one of the major reasons people recognize me is I was tall in my last couple years of high school, so I kinda stood out.

I have a pretty good memory, so I remember most folks I went to school with (whether I want to or not), but I'll sometimes get friend requests from someone I don't know at all. Not sure what's up with that, I'm not very Facebook savvy.

I've received a few requests that were clearly errors, but I do have one where I can't quite place a guy. I know we went to the same school. I'm wondering if he's one of the two guys I hung out with when I ran track, but I can't remember their names. It'll come to me in a year or two - just need to let the little grey cells have time to work.

If it makes you feel any better a couple of years back some silly person backed into my friends car at a Blockbuster video parking lot. The police arrive to take down reports. One of the officers looks at me and says "and you... I know who you are". So he says my name (and I have a complete blank stare trying to recall this person as fast as i could) and even though his badge said Sean, I yelled out "Walter!!!". It was not until I got home and fished out my high school year book that the person came back to me, but I have no real recollection of anything more than that, though I know we hung out and had the same friends.

You may think you have a firm grasp and a good memory for such things until a situation like this arises. It truly makes you realize just how many people and situations you have forgotten as the years go on

I occasionally will run into someone I once worked with (for years I might add) and have no idea who they are, only that they look vaugely familar. Sometimes I get the name, usually not. A little "hi how are ya nice ta seeya" and exit stage right before it gets awkward is all you can do.
I'm sure there's a scientific reason for this. Why can't I remember these people, when I have no trouble identifying some character actor on an episode of Rockford Files, know the precise order every member joined the Justice League of America, and all the words to "American Pie" ?

I always thought I had a great memory for people until FB came around. I have had a lot of friend requests from people I just don't remember but who have lots of my friends on their list
