I guess perhaps I should have entitled it "Coloring Books for Grown Ups." I, however, would not turn down a more adult-oriented coloring book, perhaps with line art by folks like Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Frank Frazetta and Luis Royo.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Just an aside-----does anyone have or remember the coloring books and activity books released for 1984's "Dune"? One page showed some very questionable things (dead bodies, etc) and these products were marketed, presumably, for kids.

Seeing that Sherlock coloring book reminded me that I wanted to mention that there is a Doctor Who coloring book due sometime in 2016, so I'll definitely be picking that one up. I think another cool ideas for coloring books would be for MARVEL and DC to translate some of their classic comics into coloring book form, much like the ESSENTIALS series' look kinda like coloring books only with less solid black areas. I'd also be in to seeing some classic literature converted into coloring book form---Alice in Wonderland, Moby Dick, etc. Would be cool to take a crack at coloring some of those.

In a month or so DC Comics is doing variant covers themed on the adult coloring books.

I'm pretty sure Brian did a "Coloring Book Theatre" on these books awhile back. I have them too, and yeah, there is some stuff that isn't exactly kid friendly. Back then, everyone was looking for the next Star Wars when merchandising SF films, and that led to some strange bedfellows, Dune merchandise is a good example.

I saw a commercial late last night for one of these books. Allegedly, your finished colored pages (printed only on one side) were "suitable for framing" and "make the perfect gift." Because that's what everyone wants to find under the Christmas tree: grandma's lousy coloring book page that you now are obligated to hang on the wall.

With the benefit of hindsight, if my grandma were still alive, and had the energy and motivation to not only colour a page and gift it to me, I'd be ecstatic to frame it and hang it on my wall and encourage her to do more. Right now I'm in the process of claiming a couple of my mom's decoupage and water colour projects from the 70's and 80's to hang up... something that would have been anathema to me as a surly teenager. Mom's not getting any younger, and it would be nice to have a part of her close by like that. Right now I'd love for my mom to be doing something, anything, creative with her hands, even an adult colouring book, rather than sitting in front of the TV or at the casino playing slots.

Mileage may vary for other folks, but these days I'm feeling overly sentimental.

Not to seem harsh, ape, but I think you're comment regarding "grandma's lousy coloring page" feels a little cold and heartless, bud. Like samurainoir, my mother is getting up in years (she just turned 92 earlier this month) and I would be tickled to have any kind of artwork done by her hanging on my wall just so I could hVe a pleasant reminder of her everyday. I have a tendency to think it's less the finished product that we value and more the time and effort that someone put forth to create something for us.

Wow, you guys took that completely out of context. Watch the cheap late-night commercial for yourselves, then come back and tell me what you thought of it.

I recently acquired a painting on driftwood that my mother painted when she was eight months pregnant with me. I have several of the crafts that my grandmothers made, as well as several other of their treasured (yet otherwise valueless) items. You have no concept of how many other items I have succeeded in collecting that have zero value beyond family sentimentality -- and many of those were discarded by other family members who simply don't care about such things.

Honestly, since you guys don't know me -- at all -- your snap judgements(s) of me are what is truly cold and heartless.

I stand corrected. This is exactly what I said, so only one person here has unfairly, inaccurately and harshly judged what I said.

Sorry if I seemed harsh, ape. I was not passing judgment on you personally, only making an observation that your comment seemed negative. Humblest of apologies...
