Did you ever wonder what to call a former teacher ?

My 4th grade teacher eventually quit at a young age to go into the family business of running a ma & pa convenience store in the area.

I used to frequent it often because it was the only convenience store in my town.

Even though he was only about 11 years older than me I would still call him Mr ____ when I went into his store as a grown up.

To this day I call him Mr. ____

I always felt odd because everybody else calls him by his first name.

I go by the rule that if the person was an authority figure to me, my friends, or my family I use Mr. or Mrs.

For example our friends 70+ year old friend who we see occasionally...I call him Mr Xyz even though I know him fairly well. Never call him by his first name

    Same with that friends father

If it's a female I call her "Miss"; if it's a man I call him "Sir".

not me, as an adult, they all become first name friends. at work, for phone calls, I always ask for mr or mrs, but once I am at their house, I go by first name and I always tell people to call me by my first name

Well, I used to have a teacher in High school, Mr. Hoffman. I had him for Psychology and Comptemrary World Affairs. I got an A in Psych, and a D in CWA. Anyway, a few years later when I was teaching pre-school, I used to work at Gerber Children's Center (yes, like the baby food), and I was the head teacher of the toddler program. And guess who was in my class...Mr. Hoffman's son, Christopher. By that time, he insisted I call him Brian. He and his wife were pretty nice though. They even wrote a letter to the Gerber company about what a great teacher I was (blush) and I received a special letter of recognition and a pen and pencil set. Not bad for someone who nearly flunked one of his classes!

I'm a teacher and anytime I see former students they still call me Mr.. Some of the ones I'm closest to just call me by last name. But they did it in high school too and it's a pretty small community. My daughters friends all called me by my first name but they had grown up with me.

^ I'm bookish and have been happy to meet most of my teachers, still addressing them as Mr./Ms. Mrs. But has anyone had the courage as an adult to tell-off a teacher who had made your life hell? I'm curious.

As a teacher I can't stand other teachers who are tools for no reason. Some kids have it hard enough without somebody else being cruel. Theyve got other classes besides mine, some of them very difficult, and I can't see adding to that burden.
