Never had a station wagon, but for awhile we had a pick up truck with a big cap on the back. My dad rigged up a couple bench seats and a table for my sister and me to sit at when we went on road trips, it was pretty cool but would probably be deemed illegal due to safety reasons these days.

Yeah. Those fold-down seats were the best.

Roof racks were always a nice bonus.

        Could load lots of stuff.

        The far back was fantastic.

The stationwagon is superior to the S.U.V.

The S.U.V. was designed to sell bad motor-vehicles to people who thought station-wagons were un-cool. S.U.V.'s were not cool. imo. The S.U.V. is a horror on society.

Always a gimmick, truck, car, van should be the categories. The S.U.V. should be just called a truck, (the Bronco was also superior in trucks), but no-S.U.V.'s would not sell without the name. Stationwagon is still a car. I'll let the El Camino/El Ranchero slide because at least they were low to the ground and not top heavy.

It is better to be uncool than unhappy.

Someone or some celebrity will make station-wagons cool within ten years, and that will make them okay to own then.

Add letters and numbers to the name brand and they will sell like hotcakes.

Absolutely. We had a 1969 Chevy Kingswood Estate Station Wagon in green with wood paneling. We had it for probably close to 13 years or so. It was the first real car I learned to drive in.

When my Dad was stationed in CA we had to drive there from Alabama. While crossing Arizona (my Mom driving, me and my brother asleep in the "back-back" as we called the reverse seats and my dad in the passenger seat) the car blew a tire and we rolled three times before coming to a stop upside down. We actually have a picture of it somewhere. We all walked away with minor scratches, thank God. We had the car towed the rest of the way to CA and fixed believe it or not. The only remnant of the wreck was you could see the frame was bent by looking at the car from a certain angle. That thing was a tank. We ended up selling to a high school friend after I graduated and I never saw it again. I've always wondered where it ended up. I loved that car and would kill to have another one.

My aunt and uncle had one when I was really little. Their kid is named Stacy, and my aunt LOVES telling the story about how I use to call it the "Stacy-wagon".

              That is amazing!

My mom argues this, but I don't remember my parents caring about us wearing seat belts in the back seat. I use to think it was weird when I would go in other cars and other parents would insist that we put our belts on before we went anywhere. At some point in the 80s my mom did start doing that too, but I have lots of memories of bouncing around in the back seat of the car without a belt.

Very first car I ever remember riding around in was my Dad's Rambler station wagon. Not green, but a weird cross between brown and orange. It had all the features everyone else is describing that makes a station wagon worth having. If memory serves, the thing clocked in at just over 300K miles before my father traded it in on an equally large (but not nearly as much fun) Buick LeSabre.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

                  We had one ...

1980's Dodge K-Car Wagon. We beat the crud out of that thing. Chinese Fire Drills, combat boot to the radio when it stopped working (a light Fonzie tap worked too), a ditching or two due to rural winter conditions, etc.

                    Love the seat belt talk

I remember riding with my mom to the grocery store (couldn't have been more than 4 or 5), and STANDING on the front seat right next to her while she was driving.

She had a 68 Impala so there was a lot of room.

She had her right elbow partially in front of me as to hold me back if she slammed on the break.

To this day I still have no idea what EITHER of us were thinking

                    That was like 1969/1970

                    Try doing that today

Had two of them in back-to-back succession. With a family of 6, it was either a station wagon or a van for a family. We were a station wagon family.

The first one was a copper-colored 1976 Ford LTD that my parents bought used around 1978. No seats in the way back, just a storage compartment that we'd put our luggage in on family trips. All 4 kids had a designated corner of the way back. Mine was the front passenger side.

In 1983, we got a brand-new, brown, wood-paneled Chevy Caprice Classic. This had the rear-facing seats and we'd fight over who got to sit back there on long trips. Sometimes, you could fit 3 of us back there, but it was better with just 2. There were seatbelts, but I can't remember ever wearing one back there.

Every so often, I think about trying to find a 70's era wagon to restore. Then, I remember what a nightmare the rust on something like that would be and move on to slightly more sane projects.
