Did your family have a stationwagon ?

Growing up in the 70's I felt like mine was the only family that never had a stationwagon.

The closest thing we had was an AMC Hornet hatchback.

To this day I feel like I've missed something -- they looked so fun to be in.

We had one. You really missed out! I had to ride in the way back most of the time. No seats in the way back. The stationwagon has been replaced by the SUV.

GIGANTIC green one that we just rolled around the back in.

Oddly enough, as a teenager, two of my good friends had Volare Station Wagons and man, they are fun to do donuts in.

Oh, yeah! I was just telling the kid about this the other day...we rode way in the back, pillows and blankets, a mini-fort in the cargo space, back window rolled down , nobody fell out and nobody got seatbelted in. No airconditioner, just 4/60 air ( 4 windows down, 60 mph).
Great for vacation trips, laying back there reading comic books ...or going to the drive-in was like movies in bed.
I remember once we went on a trip and my 2 little brothers were riding back there. They were giggling like crazy all afternoon. Finally I hear my Dad yell at them and he pulls over. Here they had been releasing tissues out the back window the whole trip. They went through two boxes watching them fly away. Oh was my Dad mad, not because of the tissues he was thinking about the littering fines he could have got!
We also had a wagon once with a fold up seat so two people could ride backwards facing the rear window. I liked that but my sister got carsick.

I am the proud owner of an eight passenger 1993 Buick Century station wagon. I needed something low and long into which I could get my trike, or Grandma and wheelchair, or large garage sale purchases, or the dog, or any combination of those things. I figured if I had to go this route, at the very least I deserved some sexy, faux wood panels and velour upholstery! This old lady, Florida special has a whopping 85,000 miles on her and is in mint condition. However, I am sadly lacking in cassettes for the tape deck.

That looks like the one my mom had . . . first of many, actually since we had six kids in the family and the minivan had yet to be invented!

Oh yeah! Roll down the back window, Dad! We wanna stick our bare feet out! Okay, kids!

I can still smell the spilled Coke that caramelized in the summer heat. Lots of Starlog and Famous Monsters to read back there too.

My wife's grandad had one. It was the biggest car in the county! It was orange and had a rear facing seat. If she missed the bus he took her to school in it. My sisters best friends dad had one too. He was a Lutheran minister and a great fellow.bhe kept that thing showroom polished. I've laughed and chuckled just writing this. My sister and I also rode to school with some friends that had one. I thought it was so cool to be able to bail out over the tailgate.

We had a bunch of them growing up. My Dad was a carpet sales rep and always had a station wagon as his company car. Loads of fun in those things!

Well, yes and no. We only had one for one summer. A friend of my dad's left the country for one summer and we had to "babysit" his car. My older brother got to drive it, but he had to drag me and my foster sister along. Sometimes when we got on his nerves, he would drive under an open fire hydrant, ( I was freaked out by those things when I was little). We'd threatened to tell my dad, and my brother always bribed us with some treat to keep us happy. I remember my brother took us out to ride my new bike (and I was having trouble learning to use coaster brakes). Afterwards, we went to Burger King when it was the "new" thing. Have it your way? Oh Yeah!

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic

We use to have a 1972 Ford Country Squire and we went everywhere in it. My brother and I use to put the back seats down and lay in the back on road trips to Gatlinburg or to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. I can vividly remember having my Mego's in tow whenever we went on long road ventures. Megos - don't leave home without them.
