Oh....he's only here in America...thought this was going to be a thread about him joining the US Olympics Gymnastics team. I bet he'd kill on the still rings. I heard he does a great Iron Cross but his dismount needs some work.

Are we getting political here... religious...? Let's change directions... who has a custom Mego figure of the Pope? Either this one or the classic John Paul. BTW, I'm not catholic, so I'm not sure how/when/why they switch popes... is it a regeneration thing like on Dr. Who? If so, who's your fave? Who would the better pope, Tom Baker or Chris Eccleston?

I am a practicing Roman Catholic living near Washington D.C. I could have procured tickets to have mass today if I wanted but my wife wasn't interested. I thought at least we could have purchased some cheesy pope souvenirs (Pope on a Rope anyone?)
The Catholic Church has a hierarchy and I'm not exactly sure how it works but I do know that each church belongs to an Archdiocese which has oversight from a Bishop. A Cardinal has oversight for multiple Archdioceses and the Pope is a Cardinal who has been elevated to the status of Pope and head of the Church and is elected by the Cardinals....I don't remember exactly how the process works but all of the Cardinals congregate at Vatican City and nominate various candidates, debate, and vote until they can get 2/3 majority.
Once the Pope is elected, he stays Pope until he dies so it is a quasi-monarchy of sorts. Vatican City is a sovereign nation and the Pope seems to spark the same level of enthusiasm as Queen Elizabeth visiting...maybe more.
17% of the world's population is Roman Catholic and the Pope was at one time the most powerful person living on the planet.
From a Catholic point of view, John Paul II was the most well liked by anyone who has lived long enough to have seen a few Popes due to his charisma and character traits. The current pope is considered to be a bit more reserved but is perceived as a brilliant scholar and theologian.
