It Looks Like We've Lost James Horner

Film Composer James Horner (Titanic, Aliens, Rocketeer, Avatar, Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan) may have been the pilot of an airplane that crashed and burned in Santa Barbara.

It has not been 100% confirmed, but here Here is a message from his personal assistant:

A great tragedy has struck my family today, and I will not be around for a while. I would like some privacy and time to heal. We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart, and unbelievable talent. He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road. Love Sylvia.

wowowow...the man rivaled John Williams in the 80's and surpassed him in the 90's before entering semi-retirement. Hans Zimmer is the only consistently working composer who even approaches Horner's level, and he's still not there. Truly sad. Cameron must be devastated.

For a time pieces of this cue was in every other trailer you would see. I am shell shocked by his passing.

                  I can't believe it...so much talent lost.

I loved his Amazing Spider-Man score so much...

Wow! This is truly devastating news to both the film world and the musical world. Horner was a man who was super-talented and always made sure that his music made you feel SOMETHING. I remember rejoicing wildly when I found a vinyl copy of the soundtrack to THE WRATH OF KHAN!! I must've played that album continuously on my stereo for about two weeks (I'm sure my parents were ready to scream at some point). And to this day, when I listen to his score from ALIENS, It can easily take me back to the first time I saw it in the theater and was blown away. He did a fantastic job on Mighty Joe Young, Legends of the Fall, The Perfect Storm (I defy anyone to listen to the last track on that album "Yours Forever" with vocals by John Mellencamp and keep a dry eye; as overplayed and overwrought as "My Heart Will Go On" was (thanks, largely in part, to Celine Dion), this song is quiet and subdued, but heartbreaking), The Mask of Zorro, A Beautiful Mind and, of course, Titanic, (another score which, if listened to as a freestanding piece of music is awesome). Rest in peace, James Horner, your music will survive you and you WILL be remembered. Condolences to his family and friends, as well....

Try not to fall in love with this one. The nice thing is, he was prolific, so there's lots to discover and enjoy out there in his body of work, no matter how obscure the film.

One of my favourite soundtrack composers, creator of many, many truly great film scores. RIP.
