Thank you all, especially for understanding that this is a loss, and not saying "are you going to get another dog?" as some people tend to do. As if you were getting a new pair of shoes.
16 years is a long time. Most marriages don't last that long.
I'll miss the total understanding we had. She needed almost nothing to "get" what I wanted her to do. Just the slightest movement of my head, and she knew what it meant. She was also very smart. We could do our daily walk (long ones, sometimes 7-8 miles), and she could pick out what was different in a second. A ornament in a garden twenty yards away, she spotted it immediately and wanted to have a good look. And she gave love like no other dog I've ever seen. She never understood why someone (or dog) was aggressive.
You may some day get another dog, but you never, ever, replace them.
