Just to keep the thread civil and without any judgements...yes...I do own a handgun and a rifle, both given to me by my late father.

They are safe and locked up in the closet, no kids live in my house.

My dad used to hunt...I used to tag along with his friends...I never shot an animal, it was not in my nature...but I just loved going with my dad.

In my early 20s, I used to be an armed security guard, I carried a gun. I worked for two years as a security guard, never touched it except for cleaning and fire-range target shooting.

I do enjoy target shooting but have not done it in years.

I enjoy archery a lot more and go to the range in the Summers, that's a lot more challenging and fun...it's obviously a lot more physical.

My neighborhood is relatively safe, I have never had anyone brake into my house...it's pretty secured. I don't picture myself ever using a gun on another human being. I have a great security home alarm service...that alone eliminates the need for a gun...and a quick 911 call as well, lol.

That was my two-cents on the matter.

My dad was also a security guard and always had a loaded double barrel and .22 in the home. I think he told me that he only had to grab it one time at work when he caught someone breaking in.

I was basically taught to stay away from them and I did. In fact, I have only shot a .22 a couple of times at paper targets. After my father died, my mom asked if I wanted one of the guns but I declined because I have children and did not want anything to potentially happen.

I do have a really old bb gun that can only be used with CO2 canisters but it's so old they don't even make the size anymore....at least they can't be easily obtained and I haven't gone too far out of the way to find them. I have no pellets or bb's and there is nothing in the chamber so it really couldn't be accidentally discharged and I have it more as a nostalgic memory than a care for guns.

        Glock 22 - 40Cal SW pistol
        Remington 870 Express - 12 Guage scattergun
        Remington 22 long Rifle
        22 Air Gun
50 Cal blackpowder rifle Saint Louis Hawken style - Never fired it.
A pretty decent slingshot, and after the Tax rebate - I'll get a brand new shiny AK-74 Assault Rifle - more accurate then the AK47, and for longer range, far less expensive than the AR-15.

Pretty lame gun collection, by Wyoming standards. I have a neighbor with over 150 guns in his collection. I think that is excessive.

For the record: I am not a gun freak, but I don't have a problem with people owning guns, and guns aren't the problem - the idiot pulling the trigger is the problem. I will not hang around with uneducated people who like to shoot everything that moves, and boast about blowing away squirrels, coyotes, wolves, badgers, skunks or prairie dogs or any other animal just because it is "fun". If EVERYBODY threw their guns in a big pile to melt into slag, I would too. The reality is different, people kill each other and will continue to do so using any means at their disposal - be it knives, rocks, a 2x4 with a nail in it, chainsaws, axes, or guns. You can kill a guy with a sharp pencil. Look at how a few box cutters changed the world on a certain Tues in 2001. I must have the means to protect the people that are sacred to me. I hope to never have to use a gun for anything besides hunting game or shooting targets. You are welcome to disagree with my opinion, but it is pretty laid back compared to many of the people in the US.

I sold all my guns but I used to have...

          ak-47
          sks 7.62x39
intratech dc9 (manufactured in Miami) worst gun ever!
          bushmaster .223
          British enfield (ww2)
          M-1 Garand
          Thompson (ww2)
          .22 viper
          .410 snake charmer
          glock 9
          German mausers (ww2) several
          Russian Draganov (sniper rifle)
          Mini 14 .223
          mach 10
          Uzi (real deal .45 cal)
I had a real (inert) Panzerfaust
I also had a bunch of old hand guns.
I also had a huge bayonet/ knife collection
The guns are to name a few. I had 32 guns before I hung up collecting. I now have 0 and my Brittish wife wants to keep it that way.

All of this hardware and I had never hunted a day in my life nor had I any desire to. I was strictly a collector that liked to spend rounds at the range.

I don't own guns, but my father is a lifelong hunter and vintage firearms expert, so he's fully loaded.

So much so that he's actually a moderator on a firearms message board crawling with NRA types.

One of the rules they enforce?

            No politics or religion.

I am not a fan of guns and quite frankly, they scare me a bit. However, I do own a hand gun. Its a .357 Magnum and it belonged to my Dad.

I do feel the NRA does do a good job training people on the proper use and safety of firearms....whether or not you disagree with the legality of them is a different matter.

My son, learned how to load and fire a .22 safely at a target. I was very nervous to have an 11 year old at the time learning how to fire a weapon but as I watched, I was very impressed with the way the NRA representative demonstrated and showed the boys how to fire the gun in a safe and responsible manner. Whether or not that will stay with them is another story.

I think it's not so much of a politcal issue ... more of where a person was brought up.

Most us country guys like our guys

                    City guys usually don't

In countries where they're they're illegal or restricted, of course most people dont like them

I don't read this discussion as politcal

The only time it's politcal is when people wanna make it that.
So far, I havent seen that here

My Dad gave me a WWII M1 Carbine for my 21st birthday. Its in super shape. The best part of it is the barrel is stamped IBM. Since I'm a computer guy I think its cool to have a weapon made by IBM.

I have a small rental home in the mountains of West Virginia near a ski resort. Hunting is big up there and most of the hunters are not doing it for sport, they are doing it to survive.

There are so many white tail deer up there I think I could just take a random shot in the woods and hit one.

It's a totally different culture up there and completely legal to carry around hunting rifles as long as you have a license and it is out of its case.

I have seen hunters walk into restaurants with rifle in hand and nobody bats an eye. You can tell they are hunting and I will add that the crime rate up there is really low.

Hunting is really big around my area -- and where I grew up-- which isn't far away ...

                          Example, ---

We have a a good many SUMMERTIME ma and pa icecream and grill places by SUMMER and deer hunters slaughterhouses in the winter (the same place)
You literally bring your deer in whole , and they cut them up for a fee.

Jersey and PA is really big for hunting.

Turkey hunting is big here too for the last few years...
The state did some stocking a few years ago and man, the Turkey's are everwhere

I spent summers at my grandfather's farm and was hunting with my cousins at the age of 7 or 8. With a shotgun! Hard to believe, but like you say it was the culture.

Local farmers paid a bounty on prairie dogs. Hard to collect.

                            Prairie dog + shotgun= vapor

Never seen a Prairie dog until I took a trip to Devil's Tower Wyoming.

                              Man, they were EVERYWHERE !!!

They seem just too cute to shoot --- but like you said Scott, it's a cultural thing.
I was only looking at them as a 2 day tourist would

Farmers viewed them as vermin. I was trying to make money for SW figures and had better luck washing cars.
