Yes, in my family room in the finished basement, I still have a system, which is mostly a Fisher stereo my father in law bought 20 years ago and gave to my wife. It is hooked up to my old stereo speakers and a turntable I bought in 2001. It has a 5 disc CD player, the tape deck broke years ago. It is on the same wall as the bookshelves where I display megos. I still have albums I never replaced on CD, so the turntable is used quite a bit.Comment

This is the Sony CFS-300 portable radio. I saved my lawn-mowing money for a long time in order to purchase one of these back around the fall of 1982. I think it retailed for about $70 back then. At that time, in the 80s, the trend was for big huge boom boxes with detachable speakers and equalizers that no one really knew how to use except to make the bass reaaaaaaaalllllly loud and distort stuff. But the Sony CFS-300 was deceptive. It wasn't the greatest-sounding radio, but it was better than most of the pieces of junk other people were listening to. You could crank the volume all the way up and it would stay pretty true, whereas all the bigger boom boxes would get all static-y at the halfway mark. Plus, this was a lot smaller than other radios, and while it uses 6 D batteries, it's not terribly heavy when all is said and done. But, in a great fore-thinking move by Sony, this was the first radio to use a scanning technology to skip songs on tape. By pressing the FF or REW button along with the play button, the tape would run and automatically begin playing when it detected a 3-second section of silence on tape (the standard gap between songs). If there was a crappy song on one of your albums, it was no problem to skip it.
I had a SONY boombox thirty years ago that had the tape system you could use to skip sounds too. They called it an AMS system which was short for "automatic music sensor". As you note it would skip to the next three second dead air space on the tape, as it sensed where the next recorded sound was, whether it was music or not. I remember wondering why they did not call it an "Automatic Sound Sensor", but I don't think those initials would have worked.Comment

^Pretty funny. It's cool that you still play your records. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

My Wife bought it for me for Christmas. I sill have a collection of vinyl. That Elvis "Sun Sessions" record you see next to it, is the first record I ever bought on my own as a kid. I also of course, own a Harmon Kardon receiver for surround sound.

stereo monster.jpgMost people don't because they NO LONGER make actual stereo systems. The JUNK that is made now is just trashy and have NO equalizer, bass, great actual speakers by Kenwood and a KILLER turntable with working cassette decks!!!!!!! The increase in digital MP3 format not only DESTROYED the music industry but allowed for piracy but opened the door for the acceptance of poor sound quality. Im glad records are coming back since it is bringing back the popularity of the turntable. I work at a music store and people buy crappy quality sound systems with inferior sound because the DONT do their research! Im always keeping them away from crappy brands like COBY and Jensen...among others! But I agree on your statement about the vanished stereo systems along with the great music that once filled the airwaves made by REAL artists......not the trash they call music todayComment

Yes, I still have one. I play all my old vinyls on it. I prefer listening to my Beatles albums on vinyl than on cd.Comment
