    Hmmmm....

....read comics, played RPGs; shoulda been a nerd....

BUT.... I used to build all sorts of electronic widgets, showed up only for tests, passed with a low A average and knew more than most of my teachers, so I shoulda been a brain....

BUT.... I was also one of the stronger and tougher folks at the school, so maybe I shoulda been a jock....

BUT.... I also hung out with a lot of unsavory people, and got into a lot of fights, so maybe I shoulda been a burnout....

Ultimately nobody knew where I fit in, so I became "that guy." Which was fine; since I wasn't a real fan of interacting with my peers. (I definitely WAS, and AM, an angry recluse.)

I was into new wave in 1980, by 1983 in was hardcore punk. My friends and I were the first in our area to get into the mohawks, tattoos and stuff. At that time we were also skateing. That's how we got around. The punk scene was great back then and I had a blast. Got to see a lot of cool bands ,Ramones twice, GBH, Black Flagg, social distortion, Dead Kennedy's, Bad religion, circle jerks,C.O.C., and many others. I played drums in punk bands starting in 9th grade and got into clubs and opened for some of my favorite bands. I did well in school, was liked by the teachers and surprisingly enough my friends and I were pretty popular at school, almost celebrity statis. I think mostly because people just weren't used to seeing guys with 12 inch tall mohawks. Away from school was a different story. We were looked at with fear and disgust. As young kids we thought that was great too. Lot's of people wanted to fight us and my friend was almost killed by a group of guys that scalped him. After a night at the clubs My friend and I would go home and set up our gi joes and draw. Weird times.

I was #1 and #3, but I had friends of all types. I was class valedictorian (in a class of 640 students) and a 3 sport varsity athlete (basketball, track, cross county running). I went on to a perfect 4.0 in chemical engineering in college and was a varsity letter winner in track and cross country there as well.

I guess I was a 1, but a different kind of 1. The only one in advanced classes with gelled up spiked hair, played volleyball and tennis with the athletes and played dek hockey on the weekends wth the burnouts. I can guess you can say I was all mixed up. Still am!

My sophomore and junior year, I was the kid that wore camouflage pants with black t-shirts and listened to strange music.

My senior year, I was the kid that dressed like Miami Vice. I had a job at two stores in the mall called "Merry Go Round" and "DJ's". (same company) I had a killer discount and sported those Z Cavarichi's and Girbaud jeans with shirts like "Bad Boy Club", etc.

I loved my 10 year reunion. I was 6 ft, 190lbs with very little body fat. I run into the guys who played football. They were tiny little punks, shorter than me. No one recognized me (other than my true friends).

When I graduated, I was 5'-9" (maybe 10" on a good day) 165lbs and chubby. I couldn't bench press 120lbs. I was voted the most changed person.

Similar here...mostly a #1. I graduated in the top 10% of my class and most of the classes were accelerated honors or AP classes but I also played Soccer, Football, and Volleyball but wasn't really one to hang out with other jocks off the field.

I was always scrawny and similar to Chris (about 5'9" and more like 150 lbs).

Ten year reunion, I'm 6 feet, 175 lbs, nobody recognizes me. I wasn't shy but not super outgoing in High School but had changed dramatically in looks and personality. I've gained 10 lbs since the 10 year but 185 still ain't so bad (at least that's what I tell myself).

I was pretty much in my own catergory. I briefly tried to hide my geekdom in Middle School. But by high school I didn't really care who knew I was into comics (although I only shared my toy obsession with a select few). I was the class artist, and was always doodling comic stuff. It was well known I wanted to work in comics, so I guess that legitmized my geekdom somewhat. I never had much problems with bullies, mostly due to one of my best friends being one of the toughest kids in school. I was usually on the honor roll and in some AP classes, but I had to work at it pretty hard.

I was friends with people in every group imaginable. Nerds, toughs, jocks, rednecks, some preps. Oddly enough, in our class the "popular" group didn't really seem that popular. They were kind of off in their own world and everyone else pretty much ignored them. Seemed like the average folks like me had them overpowered and outnumbered.

Never went out for school sports although I was by no means inactive. I thought about trying out for soccer but the potheads filled out the team, and they were all jerks. That was the one catergory I didn't care much for.

I would have to say #3 but i was also on the honor role. I was the artist always drawing and creating. My art teacher hated me. I was a little mixed up. I had friends in all the circles and didn't really fit in just one.

    I was a chameleon.

In grade 10 I was in an all boys Boarding School, with a student population of 100 strong. I'd been there for all of Junior High School, and then grade 10. In grade 11 I attended a Co-Ed High School with 2500 students. All the little girls I had gone to school with in grade 6 were now young women.

Culture Shock to the nth Degree!

Grade 11 was spent trying to adjust. I had gone from a highly structured/controlled environment with 3 hours of after school Study Hall every day to no studying at all. My marks average plummeted from 85 to 55. My years of Captivity taught me tolerance so I was able to connect with the Jocks (Frat Rats), the Heads (Stoners), and the Geeks (Library Crowd). Girls were difficult to relate to. I found I was extremely shy and lacked self-esteem around them. In January of grade 11 I joined a local Martial Arts school and began training in Buck Hawk Pai -- White Crane Sect -- a Tibetan form of Kung Fu. I sure burned off a lot of "energy" working out.

Didn't meet any hot Kung Fu babes, though... Dang!

Grade 12 was easier. I got more involved with Sports, Student Counsel, and got my marks up to 65. I still didn't study, and did just enough work to get by. I was polite and respectful of the teachers and they left me alone. Again, that habit of tolerance and being able to co-exist with others got me through. I had learned a little about women in grade 11 and by grade 12 I was able to speak a full sentence to girls. A strong-willed young woman set her sights on me in the winter of grade 12 and we began to date. She was very popular in the school -- an athlete and honour student. Being the chameleon, I changed colours to blend in with her. My marks got better, but I still wasn't studying... I found that having a "girl-friend" -- and a popular one -- somehow increased my status in High School. Bizarre... Very bizarre...

I found University more to my liking.

No idea. I hung out with just about everybody. I was pals with the guys girls wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. I hung out with slackers. I even had a few jocks as friends.

I was a 3-sport athlete growing up (baseball, basketball, football), but only played organized basketball and football in HS. I had no size (5'9", 150), but was a speedster with great hands and quick feet.

I took advanced placement courses in my junior and senior yrs, and graduated HS already with over a semester's worth of college credit. My core group of friends were neighborhood guys I went all through school with, and by our senior year we were all good friends with jocks and nerds alike.

Many of us were also musicians, and I fronted a Springsteen tribute band my senior year for Battle of the Bands. We didn't fare too well vs. the metal competition, but it was a helluva fun time.

I look back on my HS days with a lot of good memories.

I was in the high school football team AND a Trekkie at the same time.

Just a big nerdy goof who was never picked on because of my size and association with the football team.

    Best of both worlds.
