    New Year's Resolution

I already started eight months ago...I've lost nearly 100 pounds last year...have been trail walking almost everyday like a mad man. (many of my hikes start super early in the morning, 5-6 am, before mom's caregiver shows up)..done up to 12 mile hikes. These hikes are not wimpy leveled roads...these are trails with lots of up hills...done four hour walks non stop...my legs are now like the Six Million Dollar Man, all steel, lol.

The problem, since I was so fat (nearing the 400 pound mark, dayum, I really let myself go)...is that I neglected my upper body...I just walk and walk...so my upper body is like jello, flabby, and some skin has loosened.

So, my new New Year's Resolution is to start lifting weights...concentrate on my upper body.

I'm currently building a home gym, started buying equipment...some new, some through Craigslist.

The gym will be located at my backyard deck.

    Once completed, will show pictures.

I was feeling horrible before my life change, depressed as heck, especially more with mom's health...but physically was feeling like crap...being fat sucks...for obese people who say being fat is cool, they are lying to themselves, no super heavy person feels great...being fat sucks (at least for me)...not only do you feel disgusting and feel like crap (speaking for myself, not judging others), but you are rapidly on your way to an early grave. I would sweat constantly, would run outta breath really fast, my heartbeat would race, my lower back would hurt, my knees, my sleep apnea would worsened (I don't use a CPAP machine anymore), and was having a hard time fitting in both my single cab truck and Mustang, big no-no's for me.

I eat no more than 1500 calories a day, and don't eat after 6pm. I drastically cut my beer intake a well...Although I did have two light beers yesterday for New Year's celebration, lol.

Anyway, I'm slowly starting to feel good about myself again.

I'm still fat of course, but being 285 pounds is better than hovering near the 400 pound mark.

Not gonna show pictures until I hit 250 pounds, lol. Planning on hitting that on my birthday, April 26th.

    Happy Holidays!

    Hector

P.S. BTW, for Oakland Mini Mego Meet reference, I was 356 pounds then (I'm 6' 2").

    My new cholesterol values:

My fasting Glucose level is 88.

Gotta work on my HDL, but considering it was an abysmal 26 in 2010...40 is a good value...I'm shooting for a 50 in six months from now.

Don't take any medications either...all natural.

Good for you, man. I give you a lot of credit for such a massive lifestyle change. It's not easy to do. Hang in there and keep going.

Good job, Hector. You are motivated and that is half the battle, keep up the good work, I know it is not easy.

Congrats, Hector. I took up walking this year, too, and also lost a bunch of weight. Walking is really underrated as far as exercise goes... it's easy to do, relatively cheap, and there are a lot of health benefits, including an opportunity for selfish quiet time to unwind and enjoy being outside.

Exactly, Steve...walking is awesome...so many benefits, real effective calorie burner...low impact..and as you said, you get to enjoy the outdoors. Congrats yourself too, buddy.

              Thanks guys!

I do recommend investing in shoe gear if anyone is planning on long rigorous walks.

I went through a lot of cheap shoes, was having problems, until I discovered the best shoes on Earth, Brooks Beasts...they are amazing, especially if you have flat feet...I now have a whole fleet of them, lol.

Yeah, I had problems when I started with my feet taking a pounding since I do all my walking on pavement. I tried Brooks and they were okay, but I ended up getting Hoka One One Stinsons after hearing about them on NPR. They're super-padded, kind of the opposite of those barefoot/minimal running shoes that are popular with some people.

I might try one of those, but love my Beasts, lol.

To anyone who wants to lose weight but lacks the motivation, I usually say get a dog. I got a dog, half Chihuahua and half Terrier, 9 pounds soaking wet, but spoiled rotten. He has to have his walk every day. In 6 years I have lost 60 pounds without changing anything else about how I live, including my unhealthy diet. The thing about walking the dog is you don't think of it as exercise, so it is easier to keep it up.

Best of luck to you Hector. I'm losing weight too, but I'm gonna have to get another Cortizone shot in my knees, and get my foot checked, b/c I think it's my achieles <sp>. But I actually love walking, and I'm sad that it hurts so much now.

                              Thanks, Sharry!

Yeah, those injuries can be an obstacle, but good to hear you are active too, awesome.
