Black Friday: You in - OR - over it?

Very simple. I tell people not to buy me presents for X-Mas and I don't buy any for them. There's nothing anyone can buy me I can't get myself during the year, (when I am employed). So I never bother with Black Friday.
Also being in NY it kind'a disgusts me how that kid was stampeded to death in Wal-Mart @Green Acres mall a few years back.
The behavior of the customers, wanting to continue shopping at the scene of a crime, essentially a murder scene, is just about typical for your average customer. I worked in many retail jobs and this is the attitude shared by many consumers. Basically, I want what I want. Don't bother me-just serve me.
"Shoppers behaved badly even as the store was being cleared, she recalled....“When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, ‘I’ve been on line since yesterday morning,’ ” Ms. Cribbs told The Associated Press. “They kept shopping.”...Ugly shopping scenes, a few involving injuries, have become commonplace during the bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
“Where were the safety barriers?” said Bruce Both, the union president, (of New York State’s largest grocery union, Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers, which Wal-MArt has resisted joining). “Where was security? How did store management not see dangerous numbers of customers barreling down on the store in such an unsafe manner? This is not just tragic; it rises to a level of blatant irresponsibility by Wal-Mart.”...Comment

I was debating whether to go this morning, but my daughter rolled over loudly or got out of bed (her room is over ours), and she woke me up at 4:20. I contemplated going back to sleep for a while, but wound up going out to a local store for a doorbuster. I was #5 in line at 4:50, and got the item at 6. It was orderly with lines & tickets; people were pleasant; the store was crowded but not offensive. While I was in that line, the wife was in another, and she had a similar experience.
This evening, I went to another location of the same store for crafts for the kids to do while they're on break (we're going to paint ornaments). I pretty much had the store to myself, and I picked through the remnants of the morning's sales. People at work are getting The Gift of Beard ($1.88 Chuck Norris DVDs) for X-mas this year. From there, I cruised by Target. The parking lot was busy but not packed so I parked and went in. The store was about the same: busy but surprisingly mellow and inoffensive. I got some stuff - nothing too exciting - and checked out with no wait. My next stop was Wal-Mart's parking lot, which was as far as I got to the place. Too crowded - not worth it to me. Kohl's & Best Buy were the same way, so I headed home.
Overall, I had a good time with no complaints. I'll probably go out tomorrow morning with the same approach. The key is to avoid the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free and the wretched refuse of our teeming shore (so Wal-Mart & Toys-R-Us are out). I'll confine my activities to less popular or niche stores. The $1 pointsettias at Lowes look nice.Comment

No Black Friday for me this year or any other year (past or future). As a matter of fact, NO store shopping anymore... On-Line shopping all the time! You get what you want and exactly how you want it. Plus I have never seen an item I buy that costs cheaper at the store than on-line...
Top that with the fact that you can accomplish your purchase at the comfort of your home or work (Ooops!, don't let my boss read this...).Comment

This Grey Thursday and Black Friday stuff needs to stop... 8 hours online to save $30 on an x box 1...Or guaranteed for an hour but your waiting on a 2 hour line... Get a grip people... Start remembering the meanings of the 2 holidays we trample here!Comment

At this point any meaningful holiday has been trampled on for the love of a good deal.
Take for example Veterans day. Fly the Red, White, and Blue for a deal on a Mattress or Furniture. Insulting in my opinion. This is done on Presidents Day, Memorial Day, etc.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are no different.Comment

Good point^^^. Even if holidays have already been trampled on; it's not saying we can't flip the script.Comment

I rather not deal with it. Its better to shop for gifts all year round and not worry at the last minute.Comment

OK, I slept in this morning and went out at my leisure - probably around 10. Traffic and parking were heavy but not crazy, so I went to several stores. I got good deals, checked out and parked/left without incident everywhere but Wal-Mart. At the Mart, I had no problem parking though I chose to back into a remote space so leaving would be easy. I had accumulated a few grocery items including Land O' Lakes white American cheese (the best American cheese ever made) and a pumpkin pie (mad props to Wal-Mart for making great $2.98 pumpkin pies), when I spied the cherry filled Chocodiles. At that point I began to search for a basket. The greeter told me that, alas, there were no baskets. I mean, there were baskets, just not in the store any more. People stole them all. The greeter's buddy then interjected, "If you find one, you can have it. Tell 'em Mike said so." So I got a cart. I'm not by nature a masochist, so I had no desire to push a shopping cart around Wal-Mart on Black Friday...but the allure of Chocodiles and potential deals forced my hand. And it sucked. People are oblivious and stop walking whenever and wherever the voices in their heads tell them to, and invariably I get stuck behind them. I parked the cart out of the way as soon as I could. I spent 15 minutes going through the promo movies and came away with a handful, including a few copies of the Lego movie for $4. I went back to find my cart...and it was gone. Sonofab!tch (actually, I may have dropped an F-bomb or two and attracted the attention of the guilty party...I suppose I also may have committed a felony or two - it's all kind of a blur). However, I eventually found myself walking towards the U-scan register, where I checked out without further incident.
So, overall, I guess I still had a pretty good experience. Missing baskets and a misappropriated shopping cart aren't the end of the world. People still generally seemed to be behaving themselves.Last edited by Duncan; Nov 28, '14, 1:50 PM.Comment

I'd only brave it if Mego's were still around, wonder what the day was called back then?
My neighborhood is directly across the biggest mall south of Boston to Cape Cod, so it's
a lose lose situation for me, I could walk to it, but crossing that main road is to life threatening
so I stay the heck away from it completely, I holiday shop in July.Comment
