Time to let it all go...

It wasn't an easy decision, but I've decided to sell off my entire collection. This has been a long time coming...I've been in my new house for a year now, and I'm no closer to completing my toy room than when I started. The problem is I simply have too much stuff. I am just so overwhelmed by it all that I don't even know where to start. The worst part is, my interests are so varied it's hard for me not to buy more.

The solution I came up with is to really get back to my artistic roots and focus on plastic model building. I have several kits at various stages of completion, and dozens more in storage. There are plastic model kits both new and vintage covering almost every comic, TV and movie subject there is, so I can still collect all the different things I like. Many of you have seen me post my work here. I've been building models off and on professionally for over 20 years and have won several awards.

It just feels like the right thing to do at this point. It really hit me while working on the new 66 Batman kit. I'm much happier with my version than any of the toys that have been produced, because I could make it the way I wanted to. In the end, I think it'll be a lot cooler to have a collection of figures I built and painted myself...I'm sure all you customizers out there can appreciate that.

Look for me to be listing a TON of Megos and vintage super hero toys in the marketplace in the coming weeks. I hope I'll be able to fill the holes in many of your collections. I'm not going anywhere though...you guys are family. I'll still be hanging around here talking toys and all that good stuff...not to mention posting my models and paintings.

It was bad when Kevin Smith said on Comic Book Men last night that he looks at all his stuff and knows it will be someone else' garbage some day. It is my dreaded thought as well. I just hope that mine goes to a good home, and I may have to make sure that happens before taking my final bow. Oh well, I still enjoy getting it so that is worth something!

I think about that all the time. When I die, what are they going to do with all this crap!

I have been wrestling with this as well. I have pretty much lost interest in collecting and know I should sell most if not all of it, but the thought of actually going through and listing it all is rather daunting. I am rather lazy when it comes to selling things, doesn't matter what it is, I just can't be bothered.

This comes in cycles... A lot of people seem to collect, then sell then collect again.

Part of it for me is the hunt, rather than owning it long term. I just sold something last month that I had owned for a couple of years, but had hunted for at least 25 years. I got a decent price for it, so I moved it along to someone else.

I can relate. I am still down-sizing so I can fit stuff in my toy room. I have a long way to go.

If you ever want to build a comic scenes model for me just let me know.

It's a vicious cycle, but I completely respect where Dwayne is coming from. When I started remodeling my collector room more than two and a half years ago, I had to move everything out, and I have to tell you it was like discovering alcoholism. It never occurred to me how extensive my collection was. It about scared me. So as I've stated in the past six months, I'm composing a photo journal of the things I'm selling, but want to remember fondly. Of course, I will still retain those things I love most from childhood and things I enjoy today. But I have scores of things from the past 20 years that can go that will give me the space (and sanity) I need. I wish you all the best Dwayne.

I'm near this point. We had to have some new windows and a door put into our collectibles room, and just moving everything around to accommodate this was a sobering experience. I desperately need to thin the herd. I'm not going whole hog like Dwayne is talking, but I do need to streamline the operation. The days of me buying everything are long gone, but I have decades of that compulsion pushing through the rafters.

Good luck Dwayne. Keep us posted on your progress...on both sales...and models!

This is also age. Not just physical age, but the age we live in. We're seeing a lot of stuff we only dreamed about occurring, and the reality is not matching the perception. And it doesn't have to be toys, a lot of the superhero movies have killed my attachments to the characters, which effects my collection. I'd probably unload nearly everything too if my kids didn't love having it around. I still may do it.

A simple rule to follow is if it doesn't bring you a feeling of joy, then why do you have it?

I do understand keeping the models as it's close to customizing.

It's also because plastic models are the most nostalgic thing to me. Probably because the technology has never changed. Every time I spill open that box of part sprues and open a tube of Testor's cement, it's just like I'm 10 years old again, sitting at the kitchen table with newspapers spread out. Except I'm 42, sitting at the kitchen table with newspapers spread out. It literally transports me back in time...I love it.

Keep what you personally enjoy and ditch the stuff you don't have any attachment to. We are going thru the same phase here. I haven't done a 9 inch figure custom in over a month and am leaning toward simpler Mego customs. Ditching all the 9 inch stuff would be my problem. There seems to be no interest in it on ebay. In the long run for me its going to be the Batman 66 figures and my GI Joes.
