What is the 4th of July without some fireworks?

What is the 4th of July without some fireworks?

I did not know where to post this rant - I think this is the best place but if anyone feels like it should be moved, than please tell me where to put it. I did not think it should go back room because I feel this is a post everyone should read.

Before I begin – I would like to say right off the bat that this post is not directed at any particular one person.
It is directed at most of us – and that includes myself as well.

This post is not meant to hurt or offend anyone – matter of fact it is meant to do the opposite – bring some issues to the light and have everyone do some self-reflection as to why they are members on these boards.
To make them remember why they joined the Mego Museum in the first place.

When I first joined here just about 3 years ago give or take – the boards were such an inspiring place for me. To see all these different people with different ideas come together for one common goal/hobby Mego. (sure these boards branch out – but the main goal is obviously Mego)

I thought of it as this Brotherhood - like a scene from Back Draft – “If you go, we go” type of attitude and respect everyone had for each other.

Over the last year or so – I have seen this board slip away from that direction or positive attitude. It now reminds me of high school. Almost like people are in little groups – and I do not think that is the intention of some, but just feels like that is the way this is heading.

I will not speak for everyone – I will only speak for myself.
For me personally – I like everyone on the boards, I have no problems with anyone here. I like to think of you all as friends. Just a few examples: I text Vman and Black Knight like 20 times a day. I email Toyroom like every other week for orders but I also pop in and e mail him just to say something is cool. I sometimes message or text Brian Bossart and he does the same. I talk to Lee via phone call every other week just about. I talk to Mike Mc5 just about a few times per week via phone or text message, Via face book I talk to many of the members here – me and kevin normally shoot the breeze a few times per day – Terry every week or so. Via e mail I make orders with just about everyone who sells. I always Check in with Scott P. to see how he is. And I always like to bounce Spidy info or questions off of Derek. I deal with Austin on a regular basis. And maybe one of the few that keeps in touch with Davey McCormick. I deal with everyone here almost Dailey. The point of this is not to say I’m Mr. Poupular – it is to show you I’m no bias to anyone here. I deal with many of you for suits – not just Brian. I deal with many for heads – not just Austin. I deal with Toyroom and Mego 73 for boxes and boards. I deal with Doc Mego, CTV and Castaway/8inch superstore.

I clearly have respect for every artist here as I own figures made by most of you here - I spread the mego love.

Only thing I do not do here really is sell. In my posts I give 100% disclosure on how I make something, where parts came from, who to get them from etc..,

I have great respect for all the people who lead me here Dave McCormick, Mike Barrett, Matt Jaycox, David lee, Austin. I dealt with these guys for many years via e mail. Its amazing I never joined the Mego Museum earlier.

I have never once thought myself better or above anyone here.
I have never once thought my customs or collection is better than anyone’s here. I do not compare my work to anyone’s here. I respect everyone’s work no matter what level they are on.

I’m not half as good as most here – heck I don’t even paint. I’m a little picky when it comes to mine and to over critical of myself. I rather pay you guys to paint my heads so they come out right, than for me to butcher a head and be unhappy with it. I think I bring other stuff to the table, great ideas and a unique way of making some of my figures.

    So now to my point:
When I first joined – I made it a point to comment on every custom posted – every last one. The days I logged in I messaged everyone who’s birthday it was to say “Happy B-day”

Now I admit I do not comment on every post anymore.
I’m sad to say it is for bad cause/ reason. I felt that I was giving respect to everyone’s customs and yet no one was making comments on mine.

I understand not everyone will like what you post, or the figure you make. But sometimes I post a figure that has hundreds of views to get like 5 comments?
Some of these very same figures are made with parts from some of you here. It is clear to me that some of my posts have obviously been looked at and have purposely been avoided from commenting on for what ever reason.

Some people post here to sell something or promote something.
Some people pop in post their stuff wish to be praised and then go away again for weeks. And in the weeks between they will not comment on anything.

At the end of the day – I do not believe this is why any of us joined here. I think we joined to be among people who enjoy the hobby and Mego figures.
Again – I’m not saying or accusing anyone here of anything that I’m not accusing myself of.

Maybe some of you think I’m just nuts – and will say I do not know what I’m talking about and I’m far off base.

IMO This was once a Brother Hood and now its like a high school –school yard.
I like to see it go back to being a Brother Hood.

So I will end my rant with this:
At the end of the day to get respect – you have to give respect.

So let’s all respect one another

Im guilty as charged, I look through threads and enjoy the discussion but just dont comment unless I feel the need to. I know its great when U post something and U get responses, it kinda makes U part of the gang and that U are being noticed. I sometimes wish we just had a "like" option next to a comment we read, but sometimes all views have been put down that I agree and nothing to add, and just dont have the need, to say "me also". The customs section, I pop in sometimes, and a custom really has to grab me to say "wow I really like that" Im just not that sort of person to praise everything I see for the sake of it, and just write "amazing work" , maybe I should? This place is home away from home, Ive sat in some farout places reading the boards, so its great to have that familiarity and cosy feeling. I just wish I could make Mego Meet one day and meet everyone.

Well good morning to you too, cupcake. j/k I get your point and like alex I've backed way off myself in the past year. For me a lot had to do with some personal crap that made me want to just hole up from the world of fun and happiness to not taint the waters. The second came from (here come some more of those fireworks I believe you were wanting to see) folks seemed to be complaining way too much about the new and upcoming Re-Mego products. Again this is my opinion but it seemed there were more people *****ing and moaning than celebrating the fact that Santa finally got around to reading and fulfilling our ultimate wish lists: bringing back and bringing us more Mego's.

      Again, just my two cents.

Been here for years.... He gets a bad rap and no respect either. Why? He aint in the boys club.

I am semi new to the forum, only on a bit over a year. Yes, at time, I may have missed posting comments. but if anything, I may over comment . I agree with alot of what you wrote Vinny0026 . I do hope for "Respect" and "Brotherhood" , I so love the Like minded aspect of collecting and customizing!!

I am QUITE new here -- today is my Two-Month Anniversary.

Quite honestly, if I have nothing particularly interesting or constructive to say in a thread, I generally say nothing. If the first post instructs me to open a YouTube or other external link, 99% of the time I exit without further exploration. When a post is essentially identical to something that member just posted on Facebook 15 minutes ago, and all I have is a snarky comment, I save the thinly-veiled sarcasm for FB. If your thread is "Post Photos of Your Jims" and I open it to find out it is all about Big Jim figures (of which I have a total of ZERO), and not a solicitation to post a photo of my dozen-or-so Star Trek Kirks, I bail before reading the second post. So I confess I am partially to blame for many of the +1 View & +0 Comments, but that's the way I roll.

If I don't like the way you built a figure, it is unlikely that I will tell you. We all have different skill levels -- I excel in many areas, but those scratch-built head scupts still amaze me (I really need to try my hand at it) -- and it has never been, and never will be, my plan to outright tell someone "You Suck!", especially if it is clear they are giving 100% into their efforts. I have indeed focused on one or another aspect of a figure to suggest an augmentation, or the different path I would have taken, etc. The LAST thing I want to do is discourage ANYONE from continuing their work, as they will assuredly gain a slow improvement of skills over time...

...unless there is a way I can dissuade everyone else from constantly outbidding me on PotA figures or random lots of Mego body parts. Then it's "Game On." And can I just share how much those other people's efforts truly suck? Why are they even spending the money on additional Ape figures? ...

I already spend more time in this Group than I should (doubt that statement? -- just ask my wife), and I am very conscious about not wasting other people's time by posting my own comments that add nothing to the discussion.

As I said, I am new here. I have been concentrating on posting overly-staged photos to showcase my customs and/or collections -- and even with that, I avoid cluttering up the Boards with too many new individual threads.

As one of the actual Father's of this place, I must not be in this mysterious, mystical boy's club either.

I can spend hours/days on content for the site and get maybe 3 comments, while some rant about the price of underwear gets 30 pages.

If the content not to your liking, try and create/discuss what you want to see. It's not a conspiracy, it's merely apathy.

I know I'm one of the few females on this board, and it's true I don't know jack about sports and most comics, and b/c I haven't been babysitting lately, my Megos haven't been played with. And yes, I'm into my dollies lately, ( I just got another boy), but I notice that either my posts get lotsa views and very little replies, or just passed over altogether. Even though this board is part of my life, it isn't my whole life. There are a lot of things I don't comment on b/c they don't pertain to me, or I just don't know enough about a topic to give a decent response. But I do respect you guys, as well as your right to reply or not to reply. And sadly you will find in the dying world or message boards (that have caved in to the Facebook masses), that there are cliques and factions, and loners, just like high school. This is just a fact of life, particularly on a forum w/ this many members. Everyone wishes that grown-ups could play nice, and not act like kids, but that's not always the case. In the end, you're only respomsible for your own actions, not the actions of others.

We all want feedback, or we wouldn't post in a forum like this. But you can't blame the people who run the board if folks don't reply. It's a hard lesson to learn, but sometimes people just aren't interested enough in the stuff you do to respond. I know. I've posted some projects I've been involved with, and have been very excited by, and they've gotten little to no feedback. Then I post "Hey, yesterday was the 25th anniversary of when Batman 89 came out" and it goes on for pages and pages. It's luck of the draw, timing, whatever you want to call it. Or, other folks here just don't share your passion. It happens.

I really don't see any difference in the place now vs. then. I'm not heavily into customs, and sometimes go weeks without looking in the custom section. When I do, I'm always amazed at the talented folks. Honestly, some are more talented than others, but the sheer joy and effort put into the figures is captivating. I'm not aware of any custom rivalry, and honestly don't want to be. This place is still the most friendly geek community on the web. I long ago gave up on nearly every other forum, because the empowered rudeness that runs rampant through them is just not worth it.

The fact that the folks from this board travel thousands of miles to gather in West Virginia every year tells me this place, and this community is alive and well, and about as tight as you are ever going to get.

Jason doesn't have a bad rap. He does have a rep, as one of the best 1/9 scale customizers around. When he was posting his work he always got a favorable response and deservedly so. The sadness is lost upon me.

Many of us don't have the time to maintain multiple social relationships. I stay tight with a handful of people by necessity. It's not a byproduct of dislike, or snobbery and I'm sure it's the same with a lot of other folks. I also don't have a lot of original opinions or insights, but I absolutely enjoy reading along. There's a lot of knowledgeable, interesting people who post here and I find a lot of joy in just taking it all in. Customizing is just one piece of the pie.

Wow! Sorry you feel slighted Vinman. I think you should be proud of the work you do even if people don't always feel the need to comment on it. I'm glad there are new customs coming out from whoever, I think it enriches the board and community here. I feel just by getting a look I'm doing something positive even if people don't necessarily comment on it. This may be a "Facebook effect". I would liken a view here to a "like" on Facebook. I think the reason you get lots of views is that your customs are always great! People want to look at what you've produced, wether it's your paints or not to me is immaterial, you had the idea, you put your thoughts together., you gathered your resources and made something awesome that didn't exist before. So I hope your not discouraged, but I understand. It always makes me feel good when I get a positive comment or even constructive criticism on a custom I've done. It means that somebody took time to put into words what they were feeling when they saw what you did.

That. For customs, I just usually say 'Looks great! Nice job!' It's not that original and if I say it multiple times, then I feel those words lose their meaning when they're repeated so much. If somebody else has said it better than me and I agree with them, then I won't respond. But that doesn't mean I don't like them. My favorites bar is filled with lots of custom mego threads.
