Tonight's Big Bang was great, proving me at least partially wrong. There are still good episodes left in it. This one was real sharp. Whenever Will Wheaton is on, it brings out their best.
I think the Big Bang Theory did manage a soft-reboot and stretch out their longevity successfully with the introduction of the additional female cast. This is after previous female characters came and went. Leslie was obviously designed to be a foil for Sheldon, but never was as good as Penny is in that roll (or Wheaton or Kriptke for that matter).
It is fascinating how Amy evolved from a female version Sheldon in the initial appearances into a character unto herself. The sharpest difference being that her desire for acceptance and a relationship.
Beyond the differences in the unaired pilot (Sheldon's sexuality and the "street smart" version of Penny), I'm not sure Sheldon would now be written as someone who would have suggested donating his sperm for money as he did in the first official episode (and unaired pilot).
also very neat how he's just one of many characters in recent years on television, written as suffering from Aspergers Syndrome, but never having them state it outright on the show.
They also dropped Amy's bi-sexual tendencies toward Penny, which was a running gag for much of her initial season.
Howard is no longer the letch he once was, Raj can talk to women, Leonard is more confident, and Sheldon is a bit less....Sheldon.
But for the most part it's come very slowly. Unlike, say Fonzie, who comes back from summer hiatus with a beard and starts teaching school in a blazer!
I like that when Howard's wife yells, she sounds just like his mother. It's a good gag that is not mentioned or commented on by the characters, but it's there.

Other than Howard commenting that it was kinda "hot" when she yelled at him. Which goes toward his creepy relationship with his mom.
I avoided BBT for a LONG time, then started catching the reruns on TBS and found I didn't hate it. It's got enough nerdy in-jokes to win me over. Some of the gags are overplayed, and Sheldon can be overwhelming at times, but I enjoy it more than most things out these days.
