Why do women pay more for haircuts?

I noticed the prices are usually higher for women, even if they have short hair. Men, on the other hand, usually pay less, even if they have long hair. This is just for a standard haircut.

    What gives? Isn't that discrimination?

I haven't owned hair since 2001, so I'm kinda out of the loop on this. Women are simply more demanding about how they have it done, so they go to salons where the staff has more training, is better skilled and thus commands a higher salary.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

Bahhaaa! I wouldn't know! I do it myself now.

Used to pay like $80 for a perm and cut (my hair is really flat) only to have them NEVER EVER EVER listen to me, and botch it so bad I'd go home and cry and wait for it to grow out.
I don't understand what is so difficult about LAYERS and loose curls. NOT 'all the same length' giving me a ridiculous triangle shaped head. Seriously, every time I say I want layered different length cuts to give it body, they'd look at me confused, then exclaim 'OH I know what you want!', then proceed to cut it ALL THE SAME LENGTH and just feather the ends. Triangle.
        *sigh* want L-A-Y-E-R-S.

So now I have a hand held mirror, scissors, comb, and I do it my damn self. Never been happier (okay, it does take hours though).
With my own cuts (I don't see nor care if it's uneven or choppy, so damn proud), I don't even need a perm really because it has more body, you know, with the different layers. I also color it, and occasionally perm it myself. FREE! (minus small cost of store bought products).

        SCREW YOU SYSTEM!!!!

Yes, women are more picky. And apparently we are very sarcastic when unhappy. I suspect that extra money is a sarcasm fee.

Maybe because most men just require it CUT and not styled.

Speaking of which, I am depressed over having to get mine cut. Had long hair most of my life, but only now realized that men just can't have it without proper care. Getting old really really sucks.

Sorry, I should have clarified...I'm talking about different prices for men and women at the SAME place. Best Cuts at our local mall charges men $13 and women $20 for the same service.

            If I was a woman I'd be P.O.ed...

I think it's because there isn't a standard haircut, but two different standards. Plus, in our society, if it cost $10 like my barbershop does, a lot of women would feel as if they were getting something less than the best. They want the experience of the whole thing; whereas, men tend to go to barbershops and want a minimal experience. We might grunt an occasional "Nice weather this weekend," but I'm not looking for a rapport or relationship of any sort. What makes me feel sorry for women is that they pay so much for a certain style and the hairdresser does whatever she wants to, anyway. A barber always makes me look better than when I came in. Not that looking like Uncle Fester is "better," but at least I'm more tidy in appearance than before.

EDIT: And I posted one minute too late to see your supplemental post, enyawd! Never mind all I said there.

I think you've pretty much covered it. But try being a black woman, and dealing w/ upkeep of hair! Actually since I started using Wen, I can pretty much handle my hair myself, (except for the occasional trim).

Old? You're only 31...practically a baby! Wait til you're 41. That's when you start noticing the thin spots...

I think a lot of people agree with that. I've seen random articles dealing with this becoming a legal issue in some places. Dry cleaning fees is another disputed issue I've heard of.

Apparently this practice was recently outlawed in Denmark!

                        Yes, it is discrimination.

Dry cleaning drives me especially mad! Why should I pay more for my cotton button down shirt then a men's button down shirt? grrr

I think it might be the fact that men are more frequent customers (on average) and require less time?

The barber/stylist rents that chair in most shops, they've got to be zealous of time.

I'm probably at the shop 5 times a year (shaggy) but my wife is probably there like twice. I actually spend more.

Yeah, I get my hair cut more than anyone else in my family...and I have the least amount of hair. Since Cindy has let her hair grow long again, she gets it trimmed maybe once or twice a year it seems. I'm there once a month.

I think it has more to do with shampoo and conditioner. Since women have longer hair, more of that stuff has to be used. And let's face it,that stuff ain't cheap. At least that why I think the prices are more.
