    Saturday Morning tv

Well, speaking for myself, I like the old school stuff. I admit some of the new DC comic stuff is pretty cool, but give me the old stuff anyday. Thats just me, so.....

But, I know kids know nothing about that era, so. How can they. They were not there, so. Im sure they like the more fast pace, stuff today. Like somebody said here, different times....

Well, being the retro 70s queen that I am, as well as a teacher, I feel it's my personal duty to introduce my kids to the classics. They LOVE the stuff I bring in for video day, mostly b/c they've never seen anything like it! They also love my classic toys. People always assume that kids today won't like retro toys or TV b/c it's not as high tech, or they can't relate to it, but have they ever given them the opportunity? Probably not. I've had very few instances that my kids won't like something I bring b/c it's from when I was a kid. More often than not, I get, "Man, you had all the cool stuff when you were a kid!"
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

          I'll tell you what's wrong...

          Cable, internet, video games, etc...

Back in the day we only had three Networks, and a few other UHF & VHF channels, that was it.

So all the effort was placed for the kiddies on Saturdays by the big three, NBC, CBS, and ABC.

Now we have the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, The Cartoon Network, etc...

          It's just not the same.

I'm afraid those days are long gone.

          Different world, different times.
Yup It's Pick and chose now. More competition for kids attention..I'll admit that Saturday morning is not as Great but the 70's Cartoons were not all that..a lot of that animation was crap and sloppy.....Hanna/Barbera's best days were behind them...compared to their earlier stuff. Filmation Had it's Bright moments....

If anything when cartoons became syndicated in the 80's is when there was a turn around and there was a Great run of cartoons......During the week as in He-man,Inspector Gadget,ThunderCats,Gi Joe,Transformers,The Littles,Spiderman and his Amazing friends etc...

Well, yeah, I admit that alot of the 70's cartoons, the animation was a bit sloppy, but I think they had more substance and character then the stuff today. They were also more slower paced, and sometimes less violent then todays cartons, especially the DC stuff. They taught a moral lesson, and were basically good wholesome stuff...

Most everything mentioned in your post was nothing but a half hour commercial for the various toy companies. Those shows sucked... LOONEY TUNES were where it's at.

Yes you're right! They were Commercials but Millions of kids and teens from that time will disagree that they Sucked. As for Looney Tunes there is no argument How great they are.........

                      >I heard him say "Its all about me". Hmmm, thats a good message for kids to pick up on.

"The Emperor's New School;" based.... more or less... on "The Emperor's New Groove." And basicly each episode revolves around him learning that being selfish is actually BAD. In true edutainment fashion.

                      >We went to school for 5 days a week, and Saturday was our release,

"Course WE watched stuff that'd been neutered by the ACT from the 60's. (Thank you Tipper Gore!)

                      >Cable, internet, video games, etc...

This one comes up a lot; but you gotta remember WE were the "Atari generation" and we watched tons of cartoons. I suspect a big part of the problem is that newer stuff is so focus-grouped, edited, watered down and marketed that there's no kick. No surprises, no shock, no real new ideas.

                      >Most everything mentioned in your post was nothing but a half hour commercial for the various toy companies.

Oh yes; the Marvel/Sunbow days! I do believe that the close ties between marketing and animation were established with shows like Gi Joe and Transformers. Transformers was the last really decent one; I bet 'cos the formula hadn't been perfected yet. So some entertainment slipped in. By the "Bigfoot Power Hour" it was pretty much over. And once that tie had been made NOBODY made cartoons for the sake of making cartoons.

But for the last ten years we've had people TRYING; but the focus groups, apathy in the industry, and fear of Standards and Practices have sucked all the fun out. The odd decent show slips through every so often; but not TOO often.

                      *sigh*
