I only own a small portion of what I really want, long unemployment has kept me down! (and all extra money goes into toys).
Basically my purpose of owning DVD's is threefold. Wait, fourthfold. I do like to revisit movies I love, but I have to wait for them to fade and become hazy in my memory a bit, which can take 1-5 years or even more. So that's a small purpose. But then I can revisit anything at anytime, and I'm spoiled that way.
Secondly, I love to have an immediate inventory to share with other local movie-philes that haven't seen some weird obscure thing I'm rabid about, and I can get it to them right away and ruin them, sending them down the dark path like myself with new obsessions. I rarely get to do this though sadly, but recently I did get to loan stacks to someone who'd been out of it for awhile. That was really fun.
Thirdly, I'm an old school collector. For books I really enjoy, I love getting the coolest best hardback editions, for DVDs the most fancy pretty fold-out or figural case, and if I had a room for a record player (someday, someday...) I'd want to get the awesome old vinyl rock records. I just really really enjoy having a fancy physical representation of what I like, I feel more connected that way. I love my Big Lebowski bowling ball, but I need to get the Alien Head and Hellraiser box.
Fourthly, for my old age!! As I get older (I've seen relatives with memories gone bad) I know won't remember the things I enjoy. If I have a bunch of movies I really enjoy, I can pop them in anytime in the future, and I'll enjoy them again all anew! It's a super-win. If I left it all up to internet downloads, I'd have no idea what to download if I could even figure out the newest technology in my old age.
I also love cataloging things, which helps because sometimes I forget what I have. I use the Film Aficionado alot, which is nice (http://splittyhead.filmaf.com), but when I go out garage saleing I don't have internet access with me (yet), so I'm still in danger of buying a DVD I already own.
