I have very few that have only been viewed once, other than some of the TV show box sets and many of those have been viewed in part of whole, more than once. I like watching movies and I like revisiting classic shows. it's like a reunion with an old friend.
streaming is all good, I have Netflix and Amazon prime, but the picture quality lacks and I don't have the TV set up for surround sound, only the bluray playerComment

We've got at least 1000 but we don't have cable. We stream Netflix, amazon and get the 4 DVDs at a time. I don't miss tv. My blu ray player will accommodate a hard drive too so I can swap shows out all the time to have them at the push of a button.Comment

I don't know how many I have, but I don't watch them enough, but I do like the idea of being able to watch what I want to watch when I want to.
I like being able to program my own little horror festival in October of my favorites. I love my Christmas movies and specials. Yeah I have too many to watch in any one Christmas season, but it's nice to be able to watch Frosty or Rudolph whenever I want.
With Football around the corner, I'm probably going to watch a few football-themed movies this week.
It's nice if I just want to watch a certain scene that I can pop the DVD in and get to it fairly quickly.
In the last two or three years I've gotten more selective.
I've stopped buying newer comedies for the most part because I've found I rarely rewatch them. I've also stopped buying TV series other than old classics - looking forward to getting the Dobbie Gillis series - because many can be accessed streaming.
But really, the movies are a comfort to me. I mark time by them and it's fun to remember who I watched the movie with when I originally saw it.Comment

I think our DVD rack is more of a collection than an active movie viewing unit. Especially DVD TV sets of 70s shows or cartoons. We rarely watch them more than once, but it's nice to know Barney Miller or Soap is there if I should want it. And DVDs are cheap enough that it's not tying up money- especially since I buy very few new, picking them up at thrift shops or yard sales.Comment

right now I am at the rather ridiculous 5000 and over mark. I have them on shelves and for others I have those DJ cd suitcases that hold 1000 each.
But as to getting around to watching most of this stuff, I would then say around 25% of it. The rest is "oh it sounds good/interesting/something I might like/heard of" or "I know the film" kind of thing and so in the collection it goes. This would really just be for DVD. VHS/laserdisc/betamax is another story. I do have some blurays but probably less then 20 and that is it"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

On home burned DVDs (which include transfers from VHS, laserdisc, CED, 16mm, etc )we put them in paper sleeves and have in in little rubber ware containers. I know just from my last order of blank DVDs, I ordered 500 and we're down to one spindle of 50... And I know I've been ordering about that much twice a year for the last 4 or 5 years.

I don't do them anymore...
At one point, we had over 700 and the space they consumed started to embarrass me LOL
AppleTV comes along and changed my life.
Get MakeMKV and Handbrake - rip those things to iTunes on a backed up terabyte solution.
No more waiting five minutes for the bluray player to boot up and open the tray door.
No more commercials or trailers that you can't skip through before the feature.
No more repeated FBI-Don't-Copy-me screens that also waste your time.
No more waiting for an animated menu to load like some video game so you can finally find the Play button...and once you do hit Play, you get another FBI-Don't-Copy-me screen or something.
10-15mins burnt just trying to watch a movie.
And to go further, they are all cross-platform - iPod, iPhone, iPad, laptop, notbook, etc...
Annnnd if you belong to a cloud service, pop those turkeys in there and you can have access to your entire library anywhere in the world.
Just last weekend, from a cozy campsite with my wife, we sat by a fire as the sun went down - watched The Sopranos on my ipad on a 4G connection via my Dropbox account - and it was STILL faster than messing around with any dvds. Tap tap - watch.
iTunes all the way for this guy.Last edited by noelani72; Aug 13, '13, 6:06 AM.Comment

Great question Jim. I would say I have about 700 DVDs (including box sets). And probably close to 150 Blu rays. I ALSO have my VHS tapes boxed away. Now I know I don't have anywhere near as many in that format because they cost alot more back in the day and were huge space killers. Of the DVD's, I watch my television box sets the most. Six Mill, Starsky & Hutch, and Spidey '67 get frequent rotation. With my grandson in tow now, I have to add Shazam, Groovie Goolies, and all the Super Friends DVD's into a category probably best described as "extremely heavy" rotation. With the exception of METV (which I like alot), I don't have any regular viewing habits for modern television shows. Way too much sexual innuendo, which I find corny. Apparently writers have no new ideas. Now my purchasing habits of regular DVD's have plunged with the advent of Blu Ray. And even then I'm picky about what I want. Most have been re-purchases of old classics - Superman the Movie, Jaws, Star Wars, Rocky series, etc. These days the only regular DVD format I'll purchase will be for vintage television shows. I like those and they get good use. Coming from an era where I never got to see alot of things more than once a year, it's nice to have these old shows to watch at my leisure. Plus my kids grew up on them too, so they're aware of the contrast of content with whats out there today.

I feel ya there. We've had to add aisles in our "library" and full walls to hold just the store bought DVDs. It can get a little overwhelming as I'm only 5'3" and these things tower over me.

the Dj cases are nice and hold about 1000 (supermedia store used to sell their own brand and these were super good but they no longer have them so I had to go with another company which is why I mentioned about 1000, the super media ones did hold that many). But holy Christ I have a hernia and I had to move one of the cases. Need more wall space or less viewing habits"What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

I had a mid size wall shelf full. I wanted more shelves to line them up and realized it was getting out of control. I bought all the classic Treks on the 2 per disc releases. Got BTAS, STAS and Justice League on sale so got them all. A friend gave me his Twin Peaks and Prisoner collection. I'm still gravitating towards getting Man from Atlantis, Kolchack, 6MDM, UFO series set B, The Monkees season 2, other seasons of ST-TNG, DS9, Voyager. I try to limit purchases to SF & Super Hero films I like & rare TV series's. I did give away a small amount of movies I had because they can always be rented-so why own them? I may have to clean up a bit more tho. Still have a few boxes of VHS I want to transfer and get rid of.Comment
