How many DVD's do you own? And do you watch them?

I know this has been discussed before but after a night of thinning the herd so to speak I got to pondering why on God's green Earth I ever decided I needed to have so many movies and TV shows at my fingertips, that I never really watch.

I was looking at these massive stacks of DVD's in the closet and was like; "Dude, what a massive waste of space." Somewhere along the way a friend of mine had given me one of those DVD albums that holds 8 discs total per sleeve. There are 40 sleeves. I easily filled it up, packing up the empty cases and trashing the cover art. So 320 movies later (I doubled up on the second discs in the same sleeve) I still have over one hundred titles in the closet and about the same number in the entertainment center shelves. And one more of those DVD albums with 20 pages full for another 160 titles. I feel like a hoarder. Am I nuts or what? I'm sure that there are many folks with many more but it just struck me crazy to have so many that i never watch. Especially considering all the other delivery methods for entertainment these days (Satellite television, DVR recordings, internet streaming etc...).

I thought about selling them off but considering those other distribution methods (and the admitted number of oddball titles i.e. Ed Wood flicks and the like) I don't care to waste my time selling these thigns for a quarter a piece.

So what about you guys and gals? How large is your DVD / Blu Ray collections, how do you store them and how often do oyu really watch them?

98% of my DVD's are home burned old TV shows - I have a few movies but not many.

I watch them quite often because I don't like most of the stuff on TV

Tonight I watched Bionic Woman and The Time Tunnel

I have the Young Ones DVD set, a bootleg Kinks compilation and Portland filmed The Hunted (I had a glaring walk by).
      And that's it...

I have 40 or so, and don't watch much anymore with the advent of streaming. Mostly watch Hulu, and now the WB archive.

I am gonna say around 1000. I love my movies/tv seasons on disk. I have 3 rack/shelving units, mostly full. some I do watch, some not so much. but they are there if I get a hankering. I like to watch on the big screen tv with full surround sound blasting

                Around 400 I guess.
I've watched all single DVDs, and about 60% of the box sets.
I like to keep some stuff aside, for the lean times when money is short.

But I have to admit, some movies you'll love, but not watch again for like 7-8 years. At those moments, you think "why am I keeping this? Just to collect?"
My friend has 6,000 DVDs. That's serious money on those shelves.
From time to time (just before a convention), I'll select a bunch that I think "you won't watch it again, sell it."
                .
                .
                .

I've got too many to count and yes too many I've only watched once. I even have some I haven't watched yet, which makes little sense. I often wonder why I buy them in the first place. But there is a special feeling knowing you own a movie that you love and can watch it whenever you want.

Such an embarrassment of riches. Growing up with only 3 TV channels, it is mind boggling what choices we have at our fingertips. Sure, there are lots of titles that collect dust on the shelf, but there are plenty that get repeat spins as well.

                          Hmmmm....

Probably around 1200 dvds, about as many VHS tapes. I watch a lot of them over and over. I like to leave stuff on for background noise, kinda like folks do with the radio. My MST3K disks get watched A LOT. Other stuff comes in waves.... so every few years I'll have a Doctor Who kick, and watch dozens of them, over the course of a few days. I use them for research too. Sometimes I'll slap in a series that's similar to something I'm working on so's to put me in the mindset. Sometimes I'll run a series for a personal project.... like when I was restoring a bunch of old Macross models for a freind, or working on a tabletop kaijyu game.

I very much prefer having a hard copy like a disk or casette over streming. That way I ALWAYS have access to whatever I want, and I have access to the version I want. (As opposed to whatever re-edited, reworked, redubbed, recast version the company has chosen to make available....)

Probably between 200-300 including blu rays. A good portion of my DVD are TV on DVD box sets which do 100% get viewed. With movies it's all about time. After enough time goes by I want to see them again. Why pay to stream something I know 100% I'll watch again? Also I've been partially laid up recently (nothing serious, just had to keep off my feet for a few days) and my collection in this respect was a godsend. Nothing passes time go easily a 70's TV marathon on my choosing. I also recently made a decision that's I'd like take less trips/go out less for the purposes of freeing up funds to work on my Mego collection. Which means staying home. Again the DVD/Blu-ray collection makes that tolerable. Without it, there's no way it would work.
It's also about as close as you can get to having a personal time machine. Want to watch Super Friends on a Saturday morning? Check.

Want to watch Love Boat and Fantasy Island on Saturday night like back in the day? Check. Neither of those shows is available to stream that I'm aware of. I also recently had the pleasure of introducing a cousin of mine to this during our yearly visit and she loved it as did her husband. It was the first time in many years either had been able to see these shows.
which they both also enjoyed as kids.

So they take up some space. What doesn't? My collection is priceless to me for the above reasons.

I've got too many. However, I've been trading them in at a local store that carries video games and some vintage and new toys. Recycling has never been so fun.
