The Lone Ranger has been pushed back to "sidekick" position, which I also dislike.
A full-blooded Native American should have played Tonto. Obviously too much to ask for...
And I've had my fill of Johnny Depp in just about every movie. I'm expecting him as Darth Depp in the new SW movie.
That's exactly how I feel about it.
They can call it The Lone Ranger but it dosen't look like it to me and I have ZERO interest in see this.

Hmmmm.... that's been my gripe with stuff for while. It's all the same stuff over and over; even when it's not. So if it's not a direct reboot (HOW MANY Spiderman origins do we need?!?!?) it's an exact clone. (So "RIPD" is "MIB" with "ghosts.") But I don't blame "Hollywood;" I blame the audience. Everyone talks a good game about "Hollywood is SSSOOOOO out of ideas" but announce a Terminator reboot, WITH Arnie and folks lose fluids huge. The producers know the same old names, properties, styles and scripts sell; and they sell 'cos that's what people want.

"The Lone Ranger" may not be the movie we want, but it's the movie we deserve.

Maybe this movie will be wildly entertaining, and I hope all the guys on here who are looking forward to it will enjoy it. I don't usually try to form an opinion on a movie before I see it, but this one looks like so many movies I've already seen before that it's very hard to do in this case.

I agree, but sometimes I can REALLY enjoy a mindless, weak storied, big budget, explosion, eye-candy filck. So, I'm not sure that's the real reason those movies can be so painfully bad - you know?

I think the main difference might be that the filmmakers are not genuinely thinking "this is the movie I'd LOVE to see", and instead they're thinking "this is the movie THEY want to see".

Because when I see something like "Cowboys and Aliens" or "Wild, Wild West" it feels like they're condescending to the audience the whole time in some way - so I imagine that's the problem.

I've found that I have no interest in the big summer popcorn blockbuster movie. I'd much rather see the next American Beauty, if that's the example. I don't care about a mindless movie, where I forget about it before I get to the parking lot. I actually went to the theatre to see Lords of Salem, for example, and I thought about it for a week after. I'm not even sure I liked the movie! But it stuck with me and meant something because it was different than all these dumb superhero things over and over and over again.

So Lone Ranger? I don't care if I even see it. Not because of critics, but because I feel like I've seen it already.

I get that there's always the "who cares what the critics think" opinion and I'm right there with you guys on that because seriously, when has a critic ever reviewed a movie and made you go, "Oh, now I gotta see this." When you really think about it, the professional critics that review these movies in advance are usually highbrow audience members that are looking for the next American Beauty and are reviewing the summer block buster because they have to, not because they were stoked to see it. Usually the best way to get a feel for the movie is to read the user reviews if your curious about something before going to see it and even then, they can be misleading. Last week I saw Movie 43, which was a movie I had only heard terrible things about and loved it. Mostly it was knocked by people who were expecting a traditional movie and got five different comedy sketches instead but those that realized that it wasn't a traditional movie and just five individual comedy sketches, tended to like the movie more. I also heard nothing but bad things about World War Z and so far it's my favorite movie of the summer.

So it all subject to opinion and preference anyway. I think what is showing up far too often in these reviews (Lone Ranger and others) though is the word "mindless." Apparently the last 40+ minutes of the 2 1/2 hr Lone Ranger movie is nothing but a chase scene with huge explosions and I get that's become somewhat of a staple of Summer movies but maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that on the whole, the movie going public is getting tired of that. Just in this season we've been given a Star Trek Movie, A Superman Movie, and an Iron Man Movie, that featured the exact same type of "here's the final battle which will go on far longer than it should and feature crazy explosions, mass destruction, and the hero who just faced impossible odds will win out" ending. It's just become so formulaic that it's almost boring. I'm not saying the Lone Ranger should reinvent the wheel but you shouldn't be able to watch a two minute trailer and figure out where every scene in the movie is going to be based on the level of explosion and action.

The Lone Ranger will do this for me. I'm stoked for this movie!

The opinions of critics are meaningless

I could care less what they think. The Lone Ranger is going to actually get my father into a movie theater for the first time in years. I have Friday off, so me, him and my kids are going to go see it. I think we'll have fun with it.

I never expected a Lone Ranger film to be a darling of the critics, anymore than I expected Superman to be. I think the media make much to do over what the critics say, as if they have the final say on a movie's fate. They don't. We'll see what happens this weekend.

Also, the movie doesn't seem to have that authentic gritty Western feel to it, but more of a Pirates of the Caribbean slapstick movie set in the old West.

Another also, I'm kinda sick and tired of Johnny Depp. And his character of Tonto doesn't look like a serious and earnest Native-American, he looks more like the Crow or Sting from TNA pro wrestling, lol.

Yet another ALSO...never liked the actor who plays the main character, get second billing...didn't like it in Superman 78 (Hackman over Reeve), and Batman 89 (Nicholson over Keaton)...it takes away from the main hero's importance...neither the villain or the sidekick should get top billing over the main hero, I don't care how famous they are.
