The Rubber Soul and Sgt Peppers era. And when they stopped being touring band and stopped writing music that had to be limited to performing live and became great studio musicians.
I always thought that Lennon wrote somewhere between fantastic music and ok music.
Whilst McCartney (beatles era) seemed to be more consistantly good...not fantastic.

My two fav Beatles songs are:
    1. Strawberry Fields Forever
    2. Let It Be

I heartily and happily disagree with Type1Kirk's saying this era was characterized by "3 guys doing solo albums on one album" (which I realize was tongue-in-cheek, but still!). First, Ringo contributed to the singing and songwriting -- at least one song per record was a Richard Starkey special -- and he also essentially invented the melodic drum roll, which characterizes rock music to this day. Second, though the White Album was certainly four solo artists working separately together, and Let it Be was a chaotic time of dissension and internal problems, their last recorded record -- Abbey Road -- was a team effort through and through, and to my ear, remains their best.

      This a 100% agreed.
It lead up to some of my favorite solo LPS like All Things Must Pass, Imagine, McCartney, Somewhere in England, Mind Games...etc

Ok. Here comes the music critic out of me talking. Yes, I write for a music paper on local bands.

      BUT...

I think this era was an experimental era with the Beatles. Yes, Ringo contributed! I agree, you were probably joking but did you watch any of the Beatles's Anthologies? There are scenes were Ringo is working out a piece on the piano. He wasn't too keen on vocal talent but I think Ringo's Rotogravure and Stop and Smell The Roses are Ringo's best solo efforts. BTW. I am fan of that little guy with the big nose on the drums. He has inspired me to play drums at an early age next to Peter Criss.

This era you called the early solo effort era between the three guys couldn't be more far off. I think all four of them became brilliant, musicians and whatever and this era helped them become individuals as they were up to the end (well, McCartney and Starr have new stuff out and are still alive).

I picked up Ringo's Liverpool 8 and I love it. I listened thinking I was going to hear his last solo effort, rehashed but I love this new album. The songs and music are well put together!

I pretty much like anything that they did, but Abbey Road is probably my most listened to album.

Back in 1993 I worked at a dinner theatre and we were setting up for our shifts that night. A 15 year old kid who bussed tables came over to us, while we were playing that album, and said, "Hey, this band sounds pretty good, who is it?" I never heard and seen more silverware and jaws drop ever
          It's all good!

You have to give THE BEATLES so much credit for what ABBEY ROAD is, in my opinion, I mean...

They said---lets leave 'em with a great album...and they really did

I can jump around about what my favorite album by them is...REVOLVER, SPLHCB,
The WHITE ALBUM---what-have-you....but ABBEY ROAD is really their definitive album, I feel

I simply feel that ABBEY ROAD encapsulates everything that's great about what the band
had done with a focus and a finesse that was unprecedented---and for what they were
trying to achieve it sounds amazingly NOT forced.....kudos boys!
