Finally tried them yesterday. It was very good but not over the top. Still prefer Fuddruckers or even Steak 'n Shake although both of those have limited locations here. Actually stinks for Fuddruckers as they were one of the first "gourmet" burger places but have taken a beating while these newer chains have been expanding rapidly. Still not complaining though as I've always thought there was a huge burger void when Roy Rogers dissapeared, and now you Five Guys, Smashburger, and even Sonic expanding. Never been big on Mickey D's or BK and find Wendy's to be just decent enough, so I welcome all these choices now.

              Protein, lol.

Of course there's no burger like home burger...my grilled burgers over apple/oak/cherry/mesquite/maple firewood (even charcoal) are to die for, yum.

But, I don't grill all the time, but burgers sautee on an iron pan are delish too, double yum, lol.

I really like 5 guys. I prefer them to most of the "American faire" sit down restaurant burgers. Unless I want to have a beer then it's red robin for me I haven't had in and out since 97 my last time in california I remember it being real good, but the memory cheats I rememberd elong John silvers as good till I had it again 20 years later

Awesome Canadian version of fries. I was responding to Palitoys post that the five guys in his area did not serve proper Canadian fries.

I felt the same. Way overpriced for what I had. And the burger is overated for sure. Good fries, not the best. Actually we need to start a thread/post on who has the best fries! Yet now that I was diagnosd with diverticulosis im watching what i eat.

Not too many Five Guys Burgers here in the Bay Area (only three). The closest one to me is in Hayward (15 miles from my house)...there's plenty of In N Out's around here on the other hand.

Well...let me start with the price...twice as much as In N Out. But to be fair, Five Guys' burgers are more massive, so it evens out.

I ordered the bacon burger (no cheese)...and a small order of fries, I did not order the large order of fries because it has a whopping 1400 calories (the bacon burger has about 800 calories in comparison, so it's diet food compared to the fries, lol), and I didn't feel like dropping dead of a heart attack right there, lol.

Well, I was amazed how big the burger was...so I proceeded to take a bite...well...I was disappointed. It was under-seasoned...the meat patty was almost flavorless...and it was a mushy burger. I could barely hold it in place, it almost disintegrated in my hands, very messy burger.

The bacon was good...but hey, it's bacon...bacon is bacon, lol.

The fries...well...I can tell they pack a ton of calories, they are greasy, mushy, they look like they were left in the sun for two days...having said that...they were tasty...better than the burger itself.

The establishment was half full...I went there at 1 pm, lunchtime...it was definitely not packed like In N Out.

How do I compared Five Guys Burgers to In N Out?

In N Out is the much fresher burger, you don't feel guilty eating it...definitely not greasy like Five Guys. In N Out burgers are smaller, but they are cheaper priced as well. In N Out burgers taste homemade, you can actually hold it down and enjoy it in your hands, lol. I do give the edge to Five Guys on the fries, they are nasty-looking, but they are tasty. My least favorite thing about In N Out are their fries (unless you order them Animal Style)...In N Out fires are fresh but not very flavorful in my humble opinion.

                      The verdict?

Not likely I will return to Five Guys unless one opens up in Oakland, and I will give it another shot.

But in the meantime...the fast food establishment that will continue to rule in the Bay Area for me...will continue to be In N Out.

P.S. I also love the independent burger joint here in Oakland, True Burger...that's my place too, lol.

how is a chain like Friday's not fast food? All the junk there comes on a truck and nuked, just like MickyD's They just make you sit there longer to sell beer and appetizers. Last time I had a burger from there was when we got a gift card and it was just a dried out nasty piece of crud. Fries tasted like they were left over from the day before. Never again.

Everyone I know loves Five Guys. I like them too, although my favorite burger place in NY is Jackson Hole (I made the mistake of doing a google image search to show an example....I am starving now).

We don't have In and Out here. A Fat Burger opened, but they went out of business pretty quick. They were crap.
