I thought that and his follow up of "too soon" were some of his best. It was kind of a take off the old joke, "How can you tell Lincoln and Kennedy were both religious men?" They were both shot in the temple... Classic McFarlane humor is based on the old adage, "It's funny cause it's true." I don't see how some consider that to be in bad taste when some car company has Lincoln and Washington singing about the Red, White and Bluuuuuueeeeeee tooth every time a show goes into a commercial break. It crap like that (and other things like Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter) that I think is in poor taste.

Also the thing he said about Daniel Day Lewis being so into his character, he tried to "free" Don Cheadle in the parking lot. That's exactly what I would have expected from Seth. I wanted more of that and less of "We saw your boobs.." Also for a guy that is known for voice impersonations, he didn't do a single one, which was criminal. I kind of felt he was tame and some of the jokes were forced on him. Like the Sound of Music bit which he concluded with "Well there's that joke." like he didn't want to do it but did it anyway. But for all these groups to be offended by something he said, he must have done ok.

Soooo how do you do a tribute to Bond and not bother to get all of the Bonds to come out on stage. Now I heard that Connery and Brosnan didn't want to do that but that's their bad. They missed an opportunity for awesomeness. I also thought Bassey more or less screamed the song rather than sang it and I hate to say it but I don't hear the same thing everyone else seems to hear in Adele's voice. I just don't think she's that good. I really wanted Everyone Needs Best Friend to win. It was the only award of the night I had any interest in.

As for Shatner, the guy is a total joke. I really can't stand him to begin with but seeing him as Kirk at 80 is exactly why I don't want any of the original cast back for the new Star Wars films. It's kind of a sad reminder of what once was and yeah he's making a total mockery of the character in the process too.

Shat is still part of the old generation that believe movie stars should not grow old gracefully

It's why he stared wearing a rug

You can't blame him, it's just his generation

Also, you can't compare him to Nimoy that way because Nimoy was never the handsome one --- People don't care if Ernie Borgnine gets old --- But, they do talk about how old Cary Grant got.

Just some examples out of the blue

Shat, in the last decade or so, has become a caricature of himself. it's just what he does now.
that bit went on for way too long but it had some funny moments

Well, to be fair to Shatner, he did start losing his hair at a fairly young age, his early to mid thirties I believe, so getting a toupe would have been practically the only way for him to still get work back then.

He's had some bad ones, and he's also had some good ones; it kind of depends on the age he is when he's wearing it.

The one he wore in Wrath of Khan was the best one of the bunch. I actually thought it was his real hair, and subconsciously I knew that he'd been wearing a rug for a couple of decades at that point. He was also in better shape compared to now.

He's gained quite a bit of weight in the past few years, and it makes him look bloated and his eyes look like they are disappearing into his face!

Leonard Nimoy wasn't handsome when he was younger; attractive certainly, but not Hollywood handsome. He was too skinny for it, and he had a pair of Dumbo ears to deal with as well.

Right now, they are both in their early eighties!!! So naturally, they are not going to look as good as they did when they were younger.

I love Shatners new character. On the other hand I don't watch the Oscar's. Imho, just a bunch of Way over paid people that don't live in the real world, celebrating each other. And really with the carp coming out of Hollywood, nobody should be spending Millions of dollars on a party.

That beginning had me worried the whole show was going to be a dud. Shatner looked bad, and the jokes fell flat. Plus it dragged on about 5 minutes too long, IMO.

As for Shatner looking the way he does...the dude is pushing 81 and he's still active. Yu can't expect him to look like Kirk from the 1960's or even the Kirk from the 1980's at this point. When my grandfather turned 81, he was in the ground already. Casey Stengel once said most of the people my age are dead and I'll never make the mistake of being 70 again so I at least give Shatner props for staying relevant. The problem I have with him is that he's an arse and most of what he does now is a mockery of what he did in his early career. Also, he totally got away with murder but that's another road I'd rather not go down. Anyway that's what happens to most people with age. It's better to burn out than to fade away and all. Had someone like the iconic James Dean lived, he probably would have ended up like Marlon Brando or um, Rock Hudson given some of the things I've read about ol' Jimmy Dean. So it's hard to age gracefully, stay relevant, and not become a parody of yourself. Not everyone can be Jimmy Stewart in the end. Some can do it and for some like Shatner, well at least he's still relevant, I guess.

Bassey was great, but (quite understandably) she has lost some control over her voice. That's only natural. I've seen her live quite a few times, and you do notice the voice getting a bit less than what it was. She still sings better than 95% of the singers these days.
I felt that Adèle was not having a great voice day. Maybe the stress of performing for such a huge audience?

If only Shatner had sung Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds are Forever.

As far as Connery and Brosnan are concerned, their leaving the role was not without conflict. Brosnan said he was told on the phone that he lost the part. Pity Craig wasn't around to represent the franchise...

I would love to look as good as the Shat if I make it to 80.

He certainly doesn't look his age.

Zeta Jones did OK for a non pro singer.
I was under the impression that Zeta-Jones was lip synching and Hudson was not.

The Shatner bit went on far too long. Usually it would be what McFarlane does best in his shows but for the Oscars it should have been shortened. I have to question why did McFarlane do some bits for commercials, but not for the actual show. Like inserting himself into a scene w/Brosnan explaining no one orders a Martini like that-you've never had a Martini before have you? This is your first one? The James Bond tribute was just a couple of songs after a montage of over-familiar clips? What kind'a tribute is that?
