    Colin Hay, Baby. Colin Hay.

Waiting For My Real Life To Begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
    I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down down down, on me

And you say, be still my love
    Open up your heart
    Let the light shine in
    But don't you understand
    I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, and up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again
And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
    I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, soon
It's just that times are lean

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
    Don't you understand
    I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

FYI - Colin Hay is the former lead singer of the 80's band, Men at Work. Before you start laughing, know this: he's one of the most gifted songwriters I've ever come across. If you ever get a chance to see him live in concert, doing an acoustic set, go. He weaves stories in between his songs and you realize just how talented a human being he really is. He's touring now in a few select locations. He'll play acoustic sets of some of the old stuff (Down Under, Who Can it Be Now?, Overkill, etc.), but it's his songs that he's written on his own that floor me.

Seriously, I can't say enough good stuff about him. In the last couple of years, he's easily become my favorite artist, ever.

Well I was drivin' down I-95 the other night.
Somebody nearly cut me right off the road.
I decided it wasn't gonna do any good to get mad.
So I wrote a song about him instead.
            It goes like this...

            Were you born an -------?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
            'cause you're an ******* tonight.

            Yes you're an - - - - - - - ...
And don't you try to blame it on me.
            You deserve all the credit.
            You're an ******* tonight.

            You were an ******* yesterday.
            You're an ******* tonight.
            And I've got a feelin'
you'll be an ******* the rest of your life.

And I was talkin' to your mother
            just the other night.
I told her I thought you were an *******.
She said, "Yes. I think you're right."

And all your friends are --------
'cause you've known them your whole life.
            And somebody told me
            you've got an ******* for a wife.

            Were you born an --------?
Or did you work at it your whole life?
Either way it worked out fine
            'cause you're an a...hole tonight.

Its strange as people are "quick to start laughing" about the tastes of others regarding
                lotsa music-related subjects

Certain songs speak to certain people----its a blessing it works that way at all

I find it hard critiquing others' taste in music---sure, I'll do it---but I try a little class
and restraint in doing so---its the least we can do on such a sensitive topic.

                Regarding Hay and MAW?

I agree---Hay is one of the best----the "King of Neurotic"----and I think OVERKILL
is one of the best songs ever written---the acoustic version is great

As far as "my" theme song? Dang---OVERKILL could be something like that---
(Don't you agree longtime MM members?)

but---truthfully---I've written a few hundred songs in my lifetime and my
theme song is probably one of those...

                Maybe this one?

                "(Do Ya) Dig It?"

Some nights I’m nervous. Some nights I’m high.
Some nights it’s for the girls I wanna make cry.
Don’t stop believin’ this is the life for me.
Yeah, there’s no other way to make friends for free, ya see.

Do ya dig it? Do you like? Do ya dig it? What’s goin’ down?

I get immoral. I fantasize. I travel planets. Yeah, I philosophize.
I state betrayal and all the fears I hide, expose the faults of man
and some of mine. It’s fine.

Don’t know if stoners help me. Ugly words won’t make me change.
Take it in. It don’t get better. Another beer. Another play.
My livin’ movin’ hist’ry. Show an hour on a stage.
So soon the songs are over. Another beer. Another play.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

                      Colin Hay

Did anyone catch the episode of Scrubs with Colin Hay on it? That guy can be very haunting. He's definitely on my list of artists I need to dig into.

I can't think of a song for a theme. When I was a teen and not getting along with my parents and all that drama, I was partial to Behind Blue Eyes. I heard some crap metal remake of it a couple of years ago that just made me want to puke, but it didn't stay in rotation long.

                          Hi huedell,

Thanks for the info. I normally Google just about everything as it is my search engine of choice. However, this time around I just figured I would make conversation with others rather than take all of the fun out of it with using Google. To be quite honest I never did have all of that great of luck at using Google with finding all the lyrics to some of the songs I searched for at times. As far at that goes there are also website dedicated to finding commercials out there as well. I had a link to one that I had used with much help. Then I switched PC's and living in between two states and traveling I seem to have misplaced the link on one of my hard drives somewhere across the network. Besides, I knew someone here at the Museum would know what I was typing about as it is a pretty common commercial right now as Joe also pointed out in his recent post. Thanks guys! I appreciate all of the friendly help. Have a good one!

Actually, he was on two different episodes of Scrubs. He was on the opening episode of season two singing an acoustic version of Overkill. You're right, it was incredibly haunting and was the reason I started listening to Colin Hay.

He was also on an episode this season, appearing as J.D.'s child emerging from the uterus of the birthmother singing "Down Under." It was disturbing in a much different way than his first appearance, but still funny as all hell.

Colin Hay's music has been featured several times on Scrubs. If anyone's interested, I've got all his CDs. I'd be more than happy to burn copies of his out-of-print CDs for anyone that wants one. Just drop me a line.

FYI - I normally would discourage burning CDs. It keeps artists from earning revenues they rightly deserve. However, in the case of OOP CDs, the only way to get them is buying them used and the artist wouldn't see that revenue anyway.

Also, on May 17th, I'll be attending his show in Saugatuck, MI. At least, I think I will. Don't know about the costs or any of the details, but if anyone's interested, we could get together and listen to what's sure to be a kick arse show.
