Fried Chicken: Homemade, Frozen, KFC, or Popeye's?

I think I started a thread about this a while ago, but I can't remember.

Anyway, since we are talking about food in other threads, how about fried chicken?

    What types do you prefer?

Extra Crispy? Homemade? Spicy? Frozen? KFC? Popeye's?

I prefer homemade myself; my mother makes some fantastic fried chicken.

Nothing too fancy in the marinade; simply white vinegar, garlic and onion powder, some salt and a pinch of pepper. Then let it sit in a Tupperware in the fridge overnight.

As for the coating, she does it in two ways: bread crumbs and ordinary flour. Not together, mind you.

She beats two raw eggs together, puts the chicken into a ziploc bag with the egg mixture and marinade, then shake the whole thing together. Then, put the egg coated chicken into another ziploc bag, this time with either flour or bread crumbs and shake thoroughly.

As for the fry medium, my mom uses plain old vegetable oil.

As for other types of chicken, I will eat Popeye's but I really have to be in the mood for it.

KFC's chicken is all right, but needs a smidge of salt.

Frozen fried chicken is okay, as long as it hasn't been in the freezer too long. I prefer to fry it in oil after thawing it for a bit. Putting it in the microwave just destroys all of the taste.

However, cooking it in a convection oven in a small tray that has been sprayed with a bit of cooking spray gives it a nice flavor.

    I never fry chicken, I "oven-fry" it.

I really like all sorts of fast-food chicken, however. My favorite is this local mom-&-pop convenience store: They call it "broasted" and it's really salty & crispy, and comes with these huge, meaty potato wedges we call "jo-jos."
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

My wife makes some damn fine fried chicken. But my mom was the master. It was one of her greatest culinary masterpieces, among no shortage of them. When I hear Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down", the line about "I caught the smell of someone frying chicken, and it took me back to something, that I lost somewhere, somehow, along the way" gets me every time.

I avoid fried chicken out, just because it can't compare.

          You're kidding me.

There's a company with a name like that? I've never heard of it.

How bad is the chicken on a scale of one to ten?

            Hmmm,

            1-10 I would give it a 3

It's very dry and the coating has an overpowering mustardy taste

BTW, everybody thinks of Cluck U as meaning F U

              It's not

It means Cluck University .... like a chicken school

Not a very funny joke of their part

I prefer grocery store fried chicken from the deli - QFC has the best - and I like my fried chicken cold so I get the stuff that's pre-packaged in the cooler. I only eat breasts (insert perv joke here) and I will occasionally eat a drum.

My wife likes KFC Original recipe and we'll go there maybe once every six months so she can get her fix. I'll usually get extra crispy although the recipe changed so it's not as good as when we were kids.

We've never tried Popeye's and we've never tried to make it at home although I bought a mini fry-daddy so it might be something we have to try.

In Seattle we also have to local joints that are awesome - Ezell's Chicken and Heaven Sent Chicken. Heaven Sent was started by the founder of Ezell's after he was forced out.

I believe Fat Oprah used to have Ezell's flown in to Chicago on like a semi-regular weekly basis.

My fried chicken is awesome, I have pictures, but I'm not home right now, I'm posting from my iPhone.

My favorite local restaurant fried chicken is Merritt Bakery and Restaurant next to Lake Merritt in Oakland, it's delicious, forget KFC, Churches, or Popeyes.

Bakesale Betty's eatery also offers the best fried chicken breast sandwich in the area, yum.

If I get KFC, I prefer original recipe over their crispy, it's more flavorful.

Homemade for the most part. The national chains are always to hit or miss. We do have a deli at one of our local grocery stores that does fry some fine fowl though.

I've tried lots of different kinds...Mr. Chicken, deli, mom & pop, and homemade of course, but I'm always drawn back to KFC original recipe. I'm absolutely sure crack is one of the 11 herbs and spices, cause I'm addicted.

I've never tasted homemade fried chicken

closest thing I had was shake-and-bake

Popeyes for fast food chicken. There is a Maryland Fried Chicken that also carries Chinese food and run by Hispanics in Haines City that is pretty amazing, too. Especially when you get fried rice for the side.
