Yea, I don't want give stuff away for those that yet to be disappointed, but the whole story was ridiculous, the "villain" was lame. Bale was missing for over half the movie as were the other main actors. The whole plot was completely unbelievable, even for a comic movie.
It seems to be one of those movies that impressed a lot of people but as time passes it's flaws become more clear, or at least a consensus has formed around it. I was very impressed and even a little awed by the movie when I left the theater, but it's faded for me and hasn't withstood the criticisms I've heard since. Similar to The Dark Knight, a movie I loved at the time and have had no interest in watching again. Same with Begins, come to think of it.
Superman Returns was the complete opposite for me, I was highly disappointed when I fist saw it, but with each repeated viewing, I grew to like more and more over time, lol.
I liked the third, but didn't think it was great. It is pretty devoid of fun and there are far too many holes in it. It was definitely the least of the three.
My biggest issue was with the timeline of events. It was a huge mistake to have Batman gone for "supposedly" eight years. Nodody looked eight years older, and with his original career lasting only a few months, nobody would have remembered Batman eight years later. His career simply wasn't long enough to give him supposed legendary status. Bruce Wayne didn't need to be crippled up either. He got back into the swing of things way too easily. I mean, the guy goes from barely being able to walk, to putting on a knee brace and taking on Bane? It was just ridiculous. Add to that the fact Batman has less than 15 minutes screen time in an almost three hour movie, and it just doesn't hold up. After the greatness that was number two, three was a huge letdown. Seems even Christopher Nolan can't escape the number three curse.

i agree - i rewatched super return a couple weeks ago and liked it.
though i liked dark knight rises -i also agree with your thoughts on it, "[it] was long winded, depressing, and plain disappointing...the movie was void of any fun, not what a superhero film is supposed to be."
I'm the other way, I loved 1 and 3 and didn't care for 2 at all. I guess the bottom line is I can't stand Maggie "Dogface" Gyellenhal. I just want to run to the DVD player and shut it down when she comes on the screen. I thought TDKR was a masterpiece. I enjoyed all the backstory stuff for Bane and League of Shadows and enjoyed the tie-in to Batman Begins. I also loved that Bane was a normal guy. I didnt' want to see any stupid huge CGI Bane on the screen. Ann Hathaway was 10 times better as Catwomen that I thought she would be and I think they may have laid some groundwork for a Batman/Robin movie. WATCH IT!
When I got out of the theatre I compared it to Return of the Jedi. It's my least favourite of the trilogy but I don't hate it and will likely watch it again. Some good performances and stand out parts but it isn't as consistant as the first two.
In the summer spectrum, I put it above Amazing Spider-Man but below Dredd, which I thought was underrated.

Right on, Brue!
I thought Brandon Routh brought a lot of heart to the role, the special-effects were spectacular, and hearing Williams' Superman theme music was a chill maker throughout the entire movie experience.
