I feel your pain as Diabetes and High BP run in my family as well. I haven't really talked about it much, but about 1 1/2 years ago I had an examination that ended with my Doctor saying "Either lose 50-70 pounds, or you have to take a pill every day". I opted first to try the weight loss road first. It's taken 17 months so far, but I have lost 80 pounds from my high end of 260, and 12 inches off my waist. I'm hoping to lose another 5-10 before June.
