We had a 2600 for Christmas one year,it was to share with my 2 brothers,we had endless fun trying to beat each others high scores and a few arguments too.
A few of my favourite games were,Pitfall,Defender,ESB,River Raid,Dig Dug,Yars Revenge,Missile Command,Asteroids and Centipede. There are too many to count.

I still have a working setup, the same one from my childhood in fact!
I rarely play it though, as I have to turn my big honking TV sideways to change connections (I could use a splitter, but I have so many connections I don't want to mess with it or diffuse my already diffused signal anymore).
I had a friend I used to play with for hours on end, and alone of course. Now I can't play more than an hour or so, and honestly I never have the time. [:(
My absolute favs were/are Megamania (super cool, that's my adrenaline fix), Taz, Demon Attack (that game ROCKS), Zaxxon, Vanguard, and I mastered Space Invaders to the point where it would go all the way to the end level and it'd start over again!
I did like Asteroids, but I would get impatient sitting there in the middle carefully picking them off, and would instead go on madcap suicide runs that would end in like 3 seconds. Defender was cool, but those poor civilians never lasted long with me. I was too busy chasing down an alien ship I'd developed a grudge against.
Night Driver was horrible (for me). I'd like crash in .05 seconds. It'd be like Start....Crash. Start..Crash. Start......WOOo...Crash.
Indiana Jones frustrated the beegeegees out of me, because I would painstakingly get all the way to the end, but could never figure out where the cavern was so he'd just jump off the cliff and die.
It always amused me where the controller would only go so far left or right, but when you were really into a game and REALLY NEEDED TO GO SOMEWHERE, you'd lean you whole body way over with the joystick (like that would help the controls move faster) and nearly fall over. Or hold your arms way out and move the controller around (just me?). I also yelled at the TV alot. ALOT.Last edited by Splitty; Oct 18, '12, 8:18 PM.Comment

Love the 2600. Great classic game system. It's simple graphics have aged very well. My first Atari was actually the 5200 and then the 7800 which also played 2600 games. I didn't get an actual 2600 until a couple of years ago. So many great games. But if I had to pick one that really stands out, I cannot recommend Ms Pac-Man enough. An amazing port for the hardware and easily makes up for the horrendous 2600 Pac-Man.You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

Really like that lava lamp in the picture. Lava lamps are so fun to watch in the dark.Comment

I loved most Activision games - especially Kaboom.
There were others that were good - Combat, Mash...
Superhero games superman and spider-man amongst teh biggest dissapointments.
I didn't get my own Atari until I was a junior or senior in HS. Prior to that I had been playing games on my VIC-20. I got the Atari from a friend with several games. I got a sleeker packaged one a few years later from Big Lots. I got games from free to a buck over the nest few years.
I used to have a 2600 but I sold it recently.
Ohh boy....lots to say on this topic lol
But in a nutshell, yes yes and yes.
I maintain systems in my home to this day:
2600
5200
7800
Colecovision
NES
SNES
Sega/SegaCD
Jaguar
Now, I have lots of dupe games and dupe systems - keep extra systems juuust in case.
Course, I have expansion consoles for Colecovision and the 5200 - plus roller controllers.
My Coleco vision systems as well as my Atari 7800 have been modded by your's truly and I eliminated the RF Switch - they connect via RCA jacks like newer systems and the picture is beautifully clear.
I've recently restored three old NES systems with new connectors and bypassing of the 10NES chip for super reliability.
But you're right - nothing compares to good ole vintage Atari.
My wife randomly stopped at an antique shop the other day and found me a dozen or so 2600 carts still in the box. That vintage packaging is uber neat to have today.Comment

That's great! Then if we ever visit each other, we don't have to lug the games back and forth, they'll already be there.
So am I. I have to joggle the games sometimes to get them to work, but it still putters along. Much like me.
Lava lamps are awesome. That one was my Grandma's from back in the 50's and it doesn't even melt like normal ones. It's a bizarre otherworldly lumpy formation now (like a Cheetos) with colored water, which is even more fascinating.Comment

My fondest Atari memory involved a bet that my friends and I made while playing doubles in Joust. It was my buddy and me vs. my cousin and another friend. The losing team had the choice of either drinking a 1/4 cup of Tabasco or getting slapped on the back of the neck. The other team went first and came up with a pretty high score. I didn't do too well and lost all my lives quickly, so it was up to my friend to beat their score. When he was down to his final life, my cousin had crept up behind him and raised his right hand in preparation; everyone saw him there except my friend, who was still into the game. As soon as he lost his last life, my cousin's hand came down hard on his neck. It was a clean, violent slap known 'till this day as The Slap Heard 'Round Huntington Park. Needless to say, my friend was pis$ed that he never got to make the choice of punishment and claimed that he would have chosen the Tabasco. My cousin obviously brought his Slap A-Game with him that day so I opted for the Tabasco. When you're a sophomore in High School all of this nonsense made perfect sense. You are transparent; I see many things... I see plans within plans.Comment

Wonder if that will happen again? ;-)Comment

And for YEARS, before I actually owned an Atari or Coleco, I thought this display is what you were buying. I kept wondering how it would fit under the Tree and where I'd put it. I'd love to find more pics of these display stations if anyone has them.
