        Hmmmm....

As for Hollywood being out of ideas and such; it's all explained here:

I understand something people don't want to acknowledge: Hollywood sucks. And it's all our fault.

....and they're right. It IS our fault. I think #2 is particularly pertinent.

As to a dark, gritty Brady reboot; didn't they already do this, back in the ealry '90s or somesuch? Not the movies, an actual tv show.

Serioulsy, give #2 there some thought.....

It's hilarious that everyone here complains about Hollywood being out of ideas when there is thread after thread on this board exclaiming the virtues of the latest big budget superhero blockbuster reboot.

Yeah CBS' "The Bradys"...an hour-long dramedy that featured Marcia as an alcoholic, Bobby in a wheelchair (married to Martha Quinn), and Jan and her husband unable to conceive a child so they adopt..

Still waiting on the M*A*S*H update. That one could work. It's working so far for Hawaii Five-0.

I'd take The Munsters with a Grown up Eddie with his own family and their own misadventures rather than any Brady crap.....

Apples and oranges. The superheroes you refer to have never been out of the public eye and are constantly reinterpreted over and over again in the comics by different writers and artists. Some are good, and some are bad, but it's part of the norm with characters who have 50-70 years of continuous continuity.

You know the reboot I wanna see on TV? Dobie Gillis! Talk about a prime opportunity for today's young stars to connect to the past! Justin Bieber as Dobie and one of the Jonas brothers (doesn't matter which one, any one of the three will do) as Maynard.

I was going to say Car 54 where are you but I just remembered that they did do a movie version that was horrible.

Here's another quick one... Welcome Back Kotter but in this version Barbareno is the teacher at a cosmetology school.

                    -OR- (last one I promise)

Kung Fu - rebooted... this time however instead of walking the earth Kaine is traveling in an eco friendly hybrid throwing down Buddhist philosophy on a never ending tour of coffee houses around the country.

Read #2, didja? I'm a big believer in the ol' "there's no such thing as a free lunch" addage. There's always a cost.... even if you don't know it, or even if it's not you ultimately paying for it. The cost of those big budget superhero films.... and everyone's lifelong dream of seeing their favourites on the screen is that you lock the companies into this idea of recycling the past over developing something new. Hollywood (or Marvel, or DC, or any other entertainment conglomerate) doesn't sit around all lazy-like, snorting coke off a hookers backside and twiddling their moustace while contemplationg how to ruin YOUR beloved favourites. They sit around all hyper-like, pouring over millions of dollars worth of research to find out exactly what the audience wants. (The coke and hookers come later.) EXACTLY. (I believe that's #4 in the article, with a touch of #1.)

                      >The superheroes you refer to have never been out of the public eye and are constantly reinterpreted over and over again in the comics by different writers and artists

That's my point; it's a safer bet for them to redo Batman than create a new character; not 'cos of some cosmic, universal principle.... but because anything with "Batman" stamped on it has a lot more ready made appeal than anything genuinely new. And that's 'cos of the audience. You come into the movie, comic, parachute toy, whatever with all them warm fuzzy feelings you've already established for the character.

....'course, even that's not a free lunch. The downside is that those warm fuzzies come with a LOT of preconceptions, and if you don't meet them (increasingly) exactly you risk turning off your old audience. But even THAT can be gamed if you've got the resources and time. A big budget film can dazzle the crowd with celebrities, effects and hype. To the point you almost don't NEED Batman any more. Hence why a movie like the new Batman or Avengers can make a gazillion dollars, break records and the comics STILL don't see significant increases in sales.

....and there are STILL some confounding variables there. After a bit, any permutation of Batman you do is gonna seem old, if you're audience has been around long enough. (Again, #1 in the article addresses this.) And every bit of novelty you add increases the chance of honking off the established fans. Plus, there can be all sorts of hidden effects at play. I still maintain that big reason so many oldster superhero fans hate the newer comics isn't 'cos the comics themselves are particularly worse (or different) from the comics of their day; but it's because they ARE so much the same there isn't the same kick as when you saw this stuff the first time around. People ascribe an internal situation ("I've SEEN Jean Grey die before. A few times. *yawn*") externally. ("Those rotten , horrible people are screwin' with one of my favourite characters just to make a buck!!!") I forget the technical term, but it happens because you live inside your own head and any changes happen gradually.... so gradually you don't notice them happening. (Which is why you often hear stuff like "where DID the time go?" form oldsters.) External changes; like computer coloured comics, are more jarring, more noticable, and seem more sudden.... so the tendency is to ascribe any consequences of change ("oh man; Batman is so stupid now!") to those.

                      Don C.

Coming this fall, "The Micros". A family from Micro Earth arrive in our world in search of a new home. Posing as 3 3/4" action figures, they take up residence in a young girl's dollhouse in an attempt to adjust to life amongst us "giants". Featuring the voices of James Arnold Taylor, Katee Sackhoff, Seth Green, Lee Majors, Lindsay Wagner, and Mark Hamill. I'm almost tempted to pitch that idea to FOX. With Takara's approval of course.
