Yep! That's a great episode. Another great thing about the Andy Griffith Show, was that even though Andy usually worked to solve everyone's problems, he was shown to have human failures as well. Here he actually gets angry with Opie, as a parent would in the situation. When he meets Mr. McBeevee at the end of the episode, the look on his face is priceless. You can feel his relief at knowing he was wrong and Opie was telling the truth all along.

I'd say Andy Taylor was TV's best dad. The relationship between Andy and Opie was one of my favorite aspects of the show.

I almost mentioned this episode... it's definately in my top 5 TAGS episodes. Exactly because of what you mentioned... when Andy walks out in the woods where Opie said he saw a man who walks in the trees, jingles when he walks and can make smoke come out of his ears... Andy feels terrible for doubting his own son and for having to reprimand him. He stands beneath a tree, and in disgust blurts out "Mr McBeevee!" Whe he gets an answer back, you can just see the excitement light up his face. He grabs McBeevee's hand and nearly shakes it off he's so relieved. Great episode!

Believe it or not, there was one of the "color" episodes that I have in my Top 10. I know that most folks don't really like the color episodes ( which coincided with Don Knott's departure), but there was one episode in my opinion that really retained that "black and white seasons" feel. Any guesses from the TAGS fans? Hint: it centered around Aunt Bee and Clara, Andy of course, and someone who was staying at the hotel in Mayberry, was invited to dinner and the plot unfolded from there...

Did he do Salvage One for ABC on 1979?

That one sounds familiar, but I can't get the details to come up in my oversaturated brain.

The color episodes suffer from the lack of Barney, but there are still some good episodes over all. I really disliked the character of Warren, and I must not be alone, as he was kind of just forgotten over time. The best color episodes feature return visits from Barney, including the one where Warren worships him at every turn.

The fact that the show continued as Mayberry, RFD is a testament to the fondness everyone had for the side characters.

The episode was from Season 6... called "A Singer in Town". A pop star by the name of Keevy Hazelton comes to Mayberry for a quiet getaway, gets corralled into listening to a song written by Aunt Bee and Clara. His manager thinks that they can play up the "two little old ladys write a song" angle on Keevy's TV show so they rehearse it "rock and roll" just before airing. Andy tells Keevy and his manager that they can't perform the song that way and so Keevy reluctantly sings it "unplugged". What follows is a song that perfectly describes the town of Mayberry.

The episode really has that black and white feel, though it was color. The episode ending performance of the song is what puts this one over for me.

If you have never visited this website, you have missed a jewell. Anybody that has fond affections for the Megos of the 1970's will appreciate this trip down nostaglgia lane... you'll recognize these tv locations

So many of my favorites from the era were filmed on the 40 Acre Lot. Andy Griffith Show, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Batman... I love the comparitive shots.

Yes, I remember that one! It is a good one.

My only minor gripe is that they seemed to fall in a rut where Aunt Bee becomes a celebrity every 10th episode. The cooking show, the furniture polish spokesperson...

I can't tell you how surreal it was to watch a color Andy episode with Clara on TV Land, and then turn the channel over to TCM and see her chanting "HAIL SATAN" in Rosemary's Baby!!!

That link on the Desilu studios is really cool. I remember reading in "Superman: Serial to Cereal" how Jack (Jimmy Olsen) Larson used to wander around the Desilu studios and look over the sets that were just falling down. Imagine how much someone could make by giving tours of the Tara set from Gone with the Wind now!!! Or Mayberry for that matter!!!

TV Land is running an Andy Griffith Show marathon from 11 am-7 pm today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday). Worth setting up the DVR, if you can handle TV Land's new jacked up scheduling where they stretch-out half hour programs to 40 minutes to cram in more commercials!!!

Watched some of it, but they cut all of the epilogues on the ones I watched. Some of the best stuff was tagged on the end.

Earth 2 Chris... I agree about the Aunt Bee episodes. I liked her character in smaller doses anyway... and could never get enough Floyd!

Regarding the 40 Acre Lot site, I like the Star Trek picture with the Mayberry Hotel shown in the background...

And the shot of the barracks from Gomer Pyle with Wally's Gas Station in the right-hand corner...
