Fear of a box office bomb w/ GI Joe?

There was a segment on NPR yesterday suggesting that the studio fears another box office bomb like "Battleship", "John Carter" and "Dark Shadows" and that's the real reason why they pushed "GI Joe: Retaliation" back. Maybe the original 3D reason was a cover story devised by Duke and company?

Let's face it, it's not 1977 anymore and people have waaayyy more choices on what to do with their time rather than sit in a movie theater for 2 hours or more.

I remember when I was a kid in the 70s and teen in the 80s, a new sci-fi or fantasy themed film or an old one on television was a TREAT! Something to be savoured as special, unique.

Now with the net and everything else we have - it's like we're almost overwhelmed with choices and a lot of films and tv get by me- I don't have time for it.

    Thoughts, anyone?

Maybe I'm turning into that cranky old man down the street. Now excuse me, I have to go yell at sit some kids to "get off my lawn!"

I think it has zero chance of making any real money now. They've released all sorts of promotional product and even Aerosmith has a new song pushing the film. And let's not forget the theaters who ordered prints as well. Come next Spring when they release it, there will be no support for the film and the word on the street will likely be it's a dud. It's a move that screams 'no confidence' that will only grow over time. Total debacle. They should just release it straight to DVD.

they already announced they are doing reshoots because the advance screenings did not go over very well. never a good sign for a movie. it's a shame too as they really needed a good movie to keep the franchise alive after how week the first one was.....and i did like the first one, it's just a bit goofy

        Hmmmm....

I could see this. The entertainment industry is a lot like kids playing soccer: no real plan, just a bunch of screaming folks following a ball. If something hits, EVERYBODY does it. If something fails, everybody runs away.

The Rise of Cobra looked so bad, I turned it off after about 15 minutes. To give the GI Joe team an international charter just seemed stupid. Oh and their base is under the Egyptian Pyramids? Real plausible.

C'mon this is "A Real American Hero"

They should have made it more like the Hama scripted comics...it just looked dumb.

And to add to that, in 1977 they also knew how to make a real film unlike the garbage that gets churned out today

Funny, almost of all the buzz was positive and I think the film was going to succeed.

Now, it's not only put doubt on the film but apparently they're adding more of the guy everyone disliked so much in the first one. Commitee decisions have a smell all their own.

It's a piece of crap no matter how you cut. I'm too old to let myself be entertained by hour long toy commercials without feeling like an idiot.

Really, the first one made my violently ill. Like I want to puke evening thinking about it and other CGI crap fests.

I was actually really anticipating this one coming out. But how do they expect us to get behind a movie they themselves don't even know what to do with right now.

I still want to see the film regardless, but the movie studio screwed itself by pulling it until next year.

The Gi joe Fan base alone would have been enough to make this film successful especially the cast.

Yeah, the first one is really is unbelievable, they made a lot of poor choices deviating from the established material they've been peddeling for thirty years.

My biggest "hunh" was Cobra Commander, his look is on about a billion action figures, t shirts, comics, mugs, stickers what have you and they made him look like that?

I'm not a big Joe fan, I've got no dog in the fight but it really seemed like a mess.

Wasn't almost every toyline in the 80's from a cartoon that was just a long commercial. And these are the toys that we now call some of the best ever? Not sure how you can judge a movie that you have not watched yet. I myself didn't think the first one was bad enough to become ill. Granted it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. In my opinion.

Wasn't this another case of them having a script for a totally different movie that they slapped the GI Joe name on once they got the rights?

I Hate seeing movies made from earlier properties where the good guys prevailed and yet in the movies they barely win in the end and get the snot beat out of them all the way thru the movie. That is how the first one felt to me , i was interested in seeing this one with Bruce Willis in it. but they are killing the anticipation for it.
