I am self taught by watching tutorial videos on Youtube. Join a photography forum, get the terminology, find something you like and search it on Youtube.

I still have a long ways to go. I want to get Photoshop, but it is VERY expensive.

I asked for photoshop for Christmas a year or so ago, but after talking to some friends I decieded against it as it sounds pretty complicated for somebody as computer illiterate as I.
Funny thing is I took photojournalism in collage about 18 years ago (didn't finish) but things have changed so much since then (It was pre digital). I'm ok with angles and cropping and such, but still lots to (re) learn too.

Any Canon or Nikon, mid-level body, $400-$700 price range

If you don't have Photoshop, download GIMP, its free. You can easily adjust color, and other post editing things to pictures

I bought my wife a olympus pen E-PL1 last Xmas, but she never uses it. It's ok, but doesn't capture colour as well as I would like. Also too hard to manually focus, kinda just does it's own thing and I can't tell that the pics are as sharp as I'd like until I see the pictures enlarged on my screen. I think I'll ask for a good one for Xmas this year so I can get some decent baby pics and all.
Recommendations?

These are probably my two favorite shots that I have taken.

This was shot with my Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 wide angle (easliest the best portrait I've taken)

You captured the perfect relaxed look on them in a posed setting. That's a VERY tough thing to do in portrait photography, especially with kids.

Lens flare is a bit of a running gag. "ADD MORE LENS FLARE!!!1!!!!LOL!!!!", etc. Step awaaaay from the filters.



Well if you're a novice I can't wait to see what you'll be capable of by the time you turn pro. Some terrific shots there.

I am guessing you are referring to the lens flare on the black rodster. That is on purpose, added in post edit.
