I have a Canon EOS Rebel XSi, 12.5megapixel. Lenses are more important than bodies. If your camera is 12 mp's or more, you are good, you need better lenses.

I just bought a 17-50mm f/2.8 wide angle lens. It was more than my my body and three other lenses put together.

This one looks good enough to be a magazine add for something

Very nice pics (Lens flare aside. Ahem. ).

I mess around a bit with my Nikon D80...

... but mainly that's just a way to get ideas into Photoshop.

I am guessing you are referring to the lens flare on the black rodster. That is on purpose, added in post edit.

I am still a novice in both photography and editing (I only have Gimp)

Bingo! Lens quality will make or break you. Doesn't matter how good the camera is, if the lens isn't great, the photos will suck. And really, the single most important thing to know to be able to produce stellar photos is found in this saying about photographers:

Amateurs are most concerned about sharpness
Professionals are most concerned about money
Photographers are most concerned about LIGHT!

Lens flare is a bit of a running gag. "ADD MORE LENS FLARE!!!1!!!!LOL!!!!", etc. Step awaaaay from the filters.

Well if you're a novice I can't wait to see what you'll be capable of by the time you turn pro. Some terrific shots there.

These are probably my two favorite shots that I have taken.

This was shot with my Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 wide angle (easliest the best portrait I've taken)

And this was taken with my Canon 50mm f/1.8
