I bought a small lot of 3 antique metal keys(the kind you use to wind up old toys) on eBay, and the seller put them in a paper envelope, inside a larger paper envelope. The inner and outer envelopes both looked like the pic in the first post. Fortunately, the key I needed most was still in there, but one was missing. None of these were tiny parts, and they had some weight to them. The seller's response was that she'd mailed similar items before, with no problem. I got a partial refund, but I was just amazed at the lack of thought there.

So far, all the stuff I've gotten from various people I've purchased from has come nice and neatly in a well-packed box (JMC is one of THE masters of packing as is SoldierApe, AJ Collector and a few others) with no issues regarding damage to anything.

I think a good rule of thumb to consider is "do unto others." I mean, if you're a person shipping or mailing something out to someone else, think about how you would want it to look if it were coming to you and act accordingly.

Even if the seller has to charge a bit more for a bulkier mailing package, that's not anything I'd mind as long as I know that what I'm really paying the money for is safe and sound inside. BTW, here's an FYI to folks: I almost always have stuff shipped to me at my work address because that way I know there's no way it's going to get left out in the rain/snow or be at the mercy of someone who might see a box sitting on a porch or a package sticking out of mailbox!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

That's not horrible, Pat...those flat sorting are designed for that purpose...and they are actually more accurate than people...lol.

I have no problems with padded envelopes but yes, a regular envelope is risky due to it going through the sorting machine.
