I wear wool all year long. I cannot have the house lower than 68 degrees. If I can have my way it would be 80 all day all night.

Just warm enough so the pets and the pipes don't freeze. It is 48 in the house now, but I am snuggly tucked between the heated mattress pad and the comforters. I am gathering up the courage and the clothing to get out of bed.

For those of you who think this is too cold, with the outdoor boiler heat set at these temps and some of our own labor into cutting wood, we only pay $150 for heat all winter. That even counts when we have company and actually turn it up. Our neighbor heats with propane, also keeping his house cool, and he is up to $1500 so far this winter.

Sounds like you still need a fez and pipe to complete the ensemble

I wondered about this, and hearing that the neighbor is already at $1500 is a shock, since he's also staying cool. Do you know if keeping the temp cool is common in the northern latitudes? I imagine there's a point where turning the heat up is less efficient than burning money, but I figured you'd compensate with crazy insulation. Holmes on Homes (Canada) is big on that.

We have a newer house and it is very well insulated, we are just really, really cheap when it comes to things like this. I would rather bundle up than spend money on heating. Also If we wanted to cut more firewood, we could crank up the heat; but who likes to cut firewood?

On the flip side, I have friends who keep their older homes near eighty degrees and I cannot even begin to fathom what must cost.

I have co-workers who start whining and crying if the office temp drops below 74 degrees.
