Just one room then? OK, the phone is a must, the shag carpeting and wood paneling, some black light posters (and a black light of course), perhaps a disco ball. Heck, just watch Foul Play and think Dudley Moore's bedroom (aka Stanley's Beaver Trap).

If I don't get shag carpeting then I will at least get some sort of lamb skin rug to substitute, installing carpeting is a bit of a big deal (thought still a great option).
Wood paneling is a great idea too, but before I do any thing I am going to have to make a plan of the desired out come before I end up making a mess of things. Thanks for the ideas guys and girls, keep 'em coming!Ithe Monster Hero

Foul Play
Hulk, thanks for bringing back memories of Foul Play, that is one of my guilty pleasure movies. Dudley Moore's bachelor pad was great, I loved his bed that folded up into his wall, and do not forget the spanish fly. I am running to get my DVD right now.sigpic Smokey, this is not 'Nam. This is Bowling. There are rules.Comment

LILEK's is Definitely the place to go for the more. . . um, interesting, um . . . examples of 1970's decor (it's been a favorite site of mine for years now). But to be fair, please remember what a LOT of period film makers seem to forget, that most "real" people tend to live with a blend of eras--because most people simply cannot afford to "re-do" whole rooms, complete with fixtures, etc., in the latest style every time a new decorating vogue or paradigm reigns. Unless your goal is to create an over-the-top showcase of 70's cheesiness, take it easy and pick and choose.
I'd agree with shag or sculpted carpeting (ours was rust with gold, beige and brown flecks). Add some jute macrame planters, a hanging ashtray if you smoke, and some beaded style curtains (in grade school, circa '76, we cut elongated triangles [1" x 2-3"] from old wall-paper sample book pages and rolled them flat side to point) around a good quality string to make ours). Use earth tones unless you really want the rust orange, harvest gold or avocado green tones that pervaded american culture and appliances (we had gold ones, my 1st apt had avocado
). Swag globe lamps on chains that also add light in a hobby room come to mind, as do spring-loaded pole lamps if you can find one (might be considered more of a 60's item). Besides the paneling already mentioned, Op art printed wall-paper, or mirrored tiles along one or more walls (or above wanescoat (sp?) type paneling) can be period too. I remember all of these from various friends' houses pre-1980.

As for your suggestion Titan4ever, thanks for the detailed reply, I know exactly what you are talking about, my friends used to have carpet with the brown and and black speckles. I am going for the brown and orange look, I like that look, common in the seventies.Ithe Monster Hero
