As the holiday season kicks up and we get more and more commercials I was thinking back to a time when television created a kind of common language for many of us. You may not have even seen the commercial, but you knew what people meant when they asked, "Where's the beef?"

My friends and I used to quote the Freedom Rock commercial a lot. Every now and then, you'll still hear someone say, "Well, turn it up, man!"

Not really since they still run them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the ad for their knives.

In the late 70's early 80's my area got cable and WWOR soon followed. We got barraged with commercials for Carvels Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale. Crazy Eddy, His prices are INSANE!!! I remember the Ronco ad for a device to turn empty soda bottles into drinking glasses. I wonder how many mouth lacerations came about due to that?
