There's a lot of debate over this. (If you get the chance I recommend the film "American Hardcore.")

I'm not a huge fan, but I like the Dropkick Murphys, NOFX (both kinda "neo-punk") and although I don't like any of his actual bands I think Henry Rollins is brillinat.

I like Corproate Avenger too.... but they exist in that nebulous space between punk/thrash/death metal/etc.

        Don C.

I would actually say stay way from the American hardcore film because it is a pile of ****. HOWEVER DO GET the book, because it is leaps and bounds in so many ways over the crappy film that came out afterwards

Nice, those would be the "big three" for me, The 'Fits, Damned and Pistols, in that order.

Do you know the band F*cked Up?

Lots of Hüsker Dü influence, without trying to really imitate them:

                      Fantastic live band, too.

OH - and if you're into the British scene "England's Dreaming" is an incredible read. Very thorough - full of great anecdotes and history:

Amazon.com: Englands Dreaming, Revised Edition: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond (9780312288228): Jon Savage: Books

For Post Punk I highly recommend "Rip It Up and Start Again". A lot of my favorite bands are actually in this camp (Wire, The Fall, Pere Ubu, Talking Heads, Devo)

Amazon.com: Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984 (9780143036722): Simon Reynolds: Books

Oh yeah, "England's Dreaming" is a fantastic book, epecially if you like the Pistols. I've re-read it a couple times too, which is usually a sign that I really enjoyed the book.

"Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain

"Sniffin' Glue: The Essential Punk Accessory" by Mark Perry
This one is cool, because Perry looks back on his experiences and the book features reprints of the fanzine - plus, lots of cool pics.

I'll especially have to check this one out. I've read McNeil's "The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry" and found it fascinating.
