In grade 1 (first grade for you Americans) we saw "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory", but the film either broke, or we had to go right after Violet turned into a giant blueberry - so that's how the film ended the first time I saw it and it really gave me the creeps for a while.

I have brought this one up before but we watched "The Red Balloon" every year in Elementary School. I think this movie must have been mandatory Elementary School watching in the 1970's. Would really be surprised if anyone over 35 living in the USA has not seen this film in school.

The only movies I ever remember from school were the ones we saw during drivers education on the pitfalls of drinking and driving. Man, were those gorey.

Something i've always wondered ... Was drivers education mandatory ?

Reason i'm asking ... It seems like in most schools it was but in mine it wasn't.

Maybe because my school was loaded with farmers kids who learned to drive when they were 5 years old

It was and still is here. It was year long. We had 3 phases - classroom, simulation (driving in a simulator - pretty cool btw) and real driving in a car.

Today when my kids complete(d) the course they receive a certificate that allows them to get their drivers license without having to take the test with the State Trooper instructor.

                    Hmmm,

I guess all places (states) have different rules and regulations

My grade school music teacher would all have us sing a strange song every year, something about "There sits the pumpkin in the chair, chair, chair", and the classic 'Ghost of John'.

a while back TCM aired the red balloon and I promptly recorded it

Yep, we watched Red Balloon too, every year. I taped it from TCM as well, and I even found the book. My kids love it.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the Red Balloon, too. I remember one time for that we convinced our teacher to play it backwards to re-load the reel.
                                It's all good!
