Slang Words (What Are Kids Saying ?)

I just turned 36 the other day, so I know that I'm getting on but I just don't understand kids today, my kids.
They have all these things that they say like:

    en'i(t) - Isn't it
    dark - That's Bad
    sick - That's Good
    I'm Stoked - I'm Excited
pump - As a put down as in "you pump" - Meaning Pumpkin
shifin - "he's was shifin up dem stairs man" - Shifting

And any sentence that has the words "That's like SO..."

I don't think that we should all speak like Shakespeare or the Queens English, but listening to someone shouldn't make your ears bleed, unless it's Heavy Metal Music.

So is there any street talk that makes you want to kill ?

The other day my kids said they didn't want to go to a certain place because there was a bunch of "Emo's" there.

I thought they meant little kids...like Elmo or something.

Apparently though, an "Emo" is an emotionally unstable person....they were referring to Goth kids.....not that there's anything wrong with Goth mind you.

Slang doesn't bother me so much, but I pretty much want to shoot Sportscenter on a daily basis because of some subnormal athlete that gets shoved in front of a microphone and proceedes to say, "you know" dozens of times during the course of a 2 or 3 minute interview. Gaaahh!

I've heard "stoked" back when I was a kid. I hear "Oh snap" from my nephew a lot. What will those young whipper-snappers come up with next?

The one I've heard recently is "What, what"
I am told it means "what was that you just said." ....

Maybe I'm in the minority, but our kids don't have cell phones and they aren't allowed to watch tv or surf the internet all day so they don't use much text message jargon or much slang.

None of the words ever bother me. What bothers me about kids in general is the general lack of respect they have for adults. Where I live at least, kids seem to be coddled and treated as friends by their parents, and in turn, they lack most of the social graces that I had been engrained into me when I was young.

I have had teenagers say things to me that I would have never said to an adult and I even think some of the recent college graduates lack the ability to write or talk in a professional manner.

I have a 25 year old working for me who I have had to put on corrective action for sending out unprofessional emails that go out to the entire company including the CEO, COO, and Senior Management. Once it was a very nasty email because some of the expense reports were submitted late. Then she will send out emails with lot's of emoticons. These are going to the highest levels of management and I often get her emails forwarded to me with a "who does she think she is" or "what is her problem?"

I have discussed the differences between a professional email and the unprofessional ones she has sent out and she honestly looks at me and doesn't understand that it's not ok to send out nastily worded emails or to send an email to the CEO with smiley faces, sad faces, and other weird emoticons when the intent is to be professional.

The CFO got so upset with one of her emails that he literally wanted me to fire her on the spot but it doesn't quite work that way here. I had to put her on formal corrective action and let her know if she did it again, she was fired. I also told her if she was in doubt, let me review the email first and I'll tell her whether or not it's appropriate.

I was at a continuing education class to keep my CPA license active and they talked about this very subject and there is a general consensus that the Echo Boom generation, Y Generation or whatever you want to call it, is using so much slang and text message jargon in their language, both verbal and written, that it is causing a major problem for businesses because they have not been taught how to talk or write in a professional manner.

                        HAW!

You guys are all officially old! Funny thing; the slang mentioned here encompasses a pretty large time frame. Some of it should seem really familiar.

                        >ten'i(t) - Isn't it

                        That's actually redneck, not teenspeak.

                        >dark - That's Bad

New one on me; must be a coastal thing.

                        >sick - That's Good

The easiest way to translate teenspeak is to remember that it only expresses a limited number of ideas; most notably "good" and "bad." When in doubt, read facial expressions. "Sick" gets a lot of usage around here; and I've noticed it can also be used semi-ironicly to refer to something that's not good but IS endearing.

                        >I'm Stoked - I'm Excited

80's slang. But it IS the 80's again...

                        >pump - As a put down as in "you pump" - Meaning Pumpkin

....er.... no, that's not the actual definition. It's the short form for a phrase referring to the normal operations of your colon. And yeah; it is an insult. (As well as an unusually common nickname in the army. Usually bequeathed upon you by the rest of the troop.)

                        >shifin - "he's was shifin up dem stairs man" - Shifting

....? Must be another coastal thing.

                        >And any sentence that has the words "That's like SO..."

                        More 80's teenspeak.

                        >"Emo" is an emotionally unstable person....

Emo is the new Goth. (Sorta how Goth was the new "Scaries.") It's used as an insult by everyone BUT the Emo kids.

                        >"What,what"

Can also be used as an expletive along the lines of "Amen brother!" And it's used by Kyle's Mom on South Park a lot.

                        Don C.

Emo is a stupid term and has been around for 20 years or so. It seems to have evolved in meaning because years ago it had absolutely nothing to do with "GOTH" or any such nonsense. Back in the day, I always understood it as refering to a particular style of music originating from the post hardcore DC scene--a sort of overly "emotional" melodic/anthemic off-shoot of punk rock. I've always hated the term and for the most part hated most of the bands associated with the term.....The word is almost meaningless today.......

I agree that not only most of these terms are from the 80's, but complaining about slang makes some of you sound like our parents. Oh Snap, Y'all are just Whack! Cool your jets and get with the program, homeslices! Are you down wit dat? Cool Beans! OK, let me take off this cotton blazer and thin assed tie now.

That being said... don't get me started about the sad state of business communications though. No matter how poor my street grammar might have been, I knew enough to check that at the door once someone made me put on a tie for work. I love business casual, but I think someone forgot to tell these kids that loose attire rules don't equate to making yourself look like an imbecile via email.

I do try to teach them to write and communicate at the university level, but so many of the are unteachable for a complex set of reasons. I'm sorry I cannot do a better job with them before they reach you.
