I'm gonna put me whistle and daisys on me plates and go over to the battle cruiser after having a rabbit with me muckers on the dog. -
Cockney rhyming slang is sweeping the schoolyards here. Now if you'll excuse I need to go across the frog and toad and get some jockey's whips.Leave a comment:

There is not much difference between "street slang" and what ever is hip to say. We all had hip stuff to say when we were teenagers. In the 80's, we had valley girl and preppy talk. The 60's & 70's gave us groovy and other weird words. Even the phrase "it's cool" or "that's cool" came from the 50's. Teenagers today have their own "new" words.
Now "street slang" is nothing other than Black America's own "preppy talk" and changes with time as well. Do you remember "Slide my some skin"?
I am sure the teenagers in England have their own forms of street talk or preppy talk.

My Boy Say's
"Thats How I Role, yo Gangsta Style"
"Get outta my Grill,... yo"
"It's Street, yo ..I'm Talking Street"
I am looking into this Street Talk,.. currently to see where he got this from. It seems as if he has a new 1 with each passing week.. We do not watch anything on TV, nore do we as a family interact with these "Street Talkers". So Obviously it must be from School.Leave a comment:

Well, I think it's all a jolly wheeze and many of those jolly old expressions have gone for a burton. Anyone who doesn't comprenday must be a bally old beer boy, i was using those whizzo slang terms before your number was dry back in dear old blighty. Now wipe the canteen medals off ya dickie and have a nice cup of char before you're chin strapped old boy.
Whizzo prang chaps and chocks away...Leave a comment:

I don't blame the educational system.
I was really musing on what I have observed coming out of the college ranks these days.
Probably the most frustrating part is that many new graduates will not take my advice and think I'm crazy.Leave a comment:

Open Apology to the Business World (It's not my fault!)
I do try to teach them to write and communicate at the university level, but so many of the are unteachable for a complex set of reasons. I'm sorry I cannot do a better job with them before they reach you....recent college graduates lack the ability to write or talk in a professional manner.
...sending out unprofessional emails that go out to the entire company including the CEO, COO, and Senior Management...she honestly looks at me and doesn't understand that it's not ok to send out nastily worded emails or to send an email to the CEO with smiley faces, sad faces, and other weird emoticons when the intent is to be professional.....the Echo Boom generation, Y Generation or whatever you want to call it, is using so much slang and text message jargon in their language, both verbal and written, that it is causing a major problem for businesses because they have not been taught how to talk or write in a professional manner.
Here's the only explanation I can offer:

I'm doing my best, but we're just not reaching too many these days.

I agree that not only most of these terms are from the 80's, but complaining about slang makes some of you sound like our parents. Oh Snap, Y'all are just Whack! Cool your jets and get with the program, homeslices! Are you down wit dat? Cool Beans! OK, let me take off this cotton blazer and thin assed tie now.
That being said... don't get me started about the sad state of business communications though. No matter how poor my street grammar might have been, I knew enough to check that at the door once someone made me put on a tie for work. I love business casual, but I think someone forgot to tell these kids that loose attire rules don't equate to making yourself look like an imbecile via email.Leave a comment:

Emo is a stupid term and has been around for 20 years or so. It seems to have evolved in meaning because years ago it had absolutely nothing to do with "GOTH" or any such nonsense. Back in the day, I always understood it as refering to a particular style of music originating from the post hardcore DC scene--a sort of overly "emotional" melodic/anthemic off-shoot of punk rock. I've always hated the term and for the most part hated most of the bands associated with the term.....The word is almost meaningless today.......Leave a comment:

HAW!
You guys are all officially old! Funny thing; the slang mentioned here encompasses a pretty large time frame. Some of it should seem really familiar.
>ten'i(t) - Isn't it
That's actually redneck, not teenspeak.
>dark - That's Bad
New one on me; must be a coastal thing.
>sick - That's Good
The easiest way to translate teenspeak is to remember that it only expresses a limited number of ideas; most notably "good" and "bad." When in doubt, read facial expressions. "Sick" gets a lot of usage around here; and I've noticed it can also be used semi-ironicly to refer to something that's not good but IS endearing.
>I'm Stoked - I'm Excited
80's slang. But it IS the 80's again...
>pump - As a put down as in "you pump" - Meaning Pumpkin
....er.... no, that's not the actual definition. It's the short form for a phrase referring to the normal operations of your colon. And yeah; it is an insult. (As well as an unusually common nickname in the army. Usually bequeathed upon you by the rest of the troop.)
>shifin - "he's was shifin up dem stairs man" - Shifting
....? Must be another coastal thing.
>And any sentence that has the words "That's like SO..."
More 80's teenspeak.
>"Emo" is an emotionally unstable person....
Emo is the new Goth. (Sorta how Goth was the new "Scaries.") It's used as an insult by everyone BUT the Emo kids.
>"What,what"
Can also be used as an expletive along the lines of "Amen brother!" And it's used by Kyle's Mom on South Park a lot.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but our kids don't have cell phones and they aren't allowed to watch tv or surf the internet all day so they don't use much text message jargon or much slang.
None of the words ever bother me. What bothers me about kids in general is the general lack of respect they have for adults. Where I live at least, kids seem to be coddled and treated as friends by their parents, and in turn, they lack most of the social graces that I had been engrained into me when I was young.
I have had teenagers say things to me that I would have never said to an adult and I even think some of the recent college graduates lack the ability to write or talk in a professional manner.
I have a 25 year old working for me who I have had to put on corrective action for sending out unprofessional emails that go out to the entire company including the CEO, COO, and Senior Management. Once it was a very nasty email because some of the expense reports were submitted late. Then she will send out emails with lot's of emoticons. These are going to the highest levels of management and I often get her emails forwarded to me with a "who does she think she is" or "what is her problem?"
I have discussed the differences between a professional email and the unprofessional ones she has sent out and she honestly looks at me and doesn't understand that it's not ok to send out nastily worded emails or to send an email to the CEO with smiley faces, sad faces, and other weird emoticons when the intent is to be professional.
The CFO got so upset with one of her emails that he literally wanted me to fire her on the spot but it doesn't quite work that way here. I had to put her on formal corrective action and let her know if she did it again, she was fired. I also told her if she was in doubt, let me review the email first and I'll tell her whether or not it's appropriate.
I was at a continuing education class to keep my CPA license active and they talked about this very subject and there is a general consensus that the Echo Boom generation, Y Generation or whatever you want to call it, is using so much slang and text message jargon in their language, both verbal and written, that it is causing a major problem for businesses because they have not been taught how to talk or write in a professional manner.Leave a comment:
